anyone else got a discouraging dh ?

I'm desperatly trying to come up with great, creative and cheap ideas for christmas gifts ( as we all are) . Esspecially since he managed to get himself sacked last week

But everythign i come up with he's putting down , I ention jurnal jars and his responce was " nobody would want that" i mentioned making pot porri for my sister out of the bridesmaid ouquets I have dried - his opinion - thats naff .

I'm begining to lose the will to live , he;d rather buy them cheap tat than me try to make something that some thought and effort has gone into .

anyone else have the same problem ? hw do you deal with it ?

    Ignore him.

My beloved mocks me for Christmas shopping from January onwards, and thinks it's hilarious that my Christmas shopping is bought and wrapped. As I keep telling him, the shoe will be on the other foot when I am watching Christmas movies on the sofa with a hot chocolate and some toast and jam and he is running around the shops waving his credit card and being all stressed.

  • Tell him, if he prefers, he can do all the christmas shopping this year?
  • I would be inclined to ignore him and do what you feel is right.

Something that someone has put some time and effort into is always worth far more that something that has just been bought in a shop with no thought put into it at all.

I would start now though as I have been hovering around these message boards getting ideas for a few weeks and I think I will be busy until Christmas 2010!!
  • Hi,

don't even tell him, just do it! In my experience men aren't interested in choosing or buying presents (my ex just wanted to know how much it cost before he said whether he liked it, and then he would say he didn't believe in presents anyway - bah humbug!). Just do whatever you want to, women are so much more appreciative of time and effort, and don't even mention it to him, I bet he won't even think about it until the last minute and will be quite relieved if you just show him a pile of wrapped presents!

My husband loves to get excited about christmas with me and when I see posts like this it makes me so sad for you. BUT I know exactly what you mean because my brother is just like it. Everything has to be bought and sometimes I find it really drives a wedge of underlying hate between us GRR.

When I am not feeling so hormonal I get myself together and realise that MY GOD I LOVE making things and try to accept him for the way he is and just be happy doing my own stuff. I sit here on the message boards and have a laugh with the lovely people here and share my pics and ideas with them. If my husband wants to buy things then that is OK but I want to make things TOO and with the cheap ideas on here I guess you can kind of do both if you're careful.

I really hope you get it sorted and hey.. if you want to talk to someone and be excited I am ALWAYS here.. well not always.. I do sleep too :)

believe me you are not alone with
a husband with a scathing attitude.

I would just go for it and not include him
in any of the discussions regarding what
    to make for christmas.
I made those flanel cupcakes last year and
everyone who got one loved it.It was a real
cross section of people who recieved them as well.

In common with lots of others on these threads
I am making a lot of things this christmas.

    check these out

the hamper thread, they dont have to be massive
little cute ones go down well and can be made up
    really cheap

This one below is one I started
come on any time loads of pics and ideas
the girls are all really friendly and best of all
we are all skint as too,so you will fit in well
also we are all rank amatuers so dont worry
that you are surrounded by experts.
We do like pics so if you want to post any
    that would be great.

this one below is one to consider
as its all cheap to buy and if you have
any eager to cook kids in the family
you can make them a really good
    baking hamper very cheaply,like wise
    grown ups into baking too.

MY OH has no interest in it whatsoever. He won't even discuss it - his eyes glaze over! :(

I'd love it if he got excited about xmas!
  • Sometimes you have to be selective with your hand made gifts though. There was a young girl in our office, pregnant with her first baby, and I 'unbeknowns to her' began knitting what i thought was a fairly contemporary baby layette. i overheard one day telling a friend how she was not going to put her baby in any of that 'knitted stuff' but wanted stretchy baby gros,t-shirts and sweaters only. I decided from then on only to make for those I knew appreciated the time and effort......

If I left the present buying to DH, he would go to the shops on Christmas eve and buy the first thing that he saw that was alright, even if it cost over £100 which we don't have

He is also a bit of a wally when it comes to me making things to be honest.

Now if I were buying tools for everyone this Christmas, he would have an awful lot to say.

Men are definitely different from women, the end.

I've been planning Xmas presents and making stuff to give for a few months and my OH thinks I've lost the plot but humours me most of the time and occasionally surprises me with a "that's actually really nice" comment! Unbeknown to him I've planned everyone's presents, already bought or made most of them, bought his and bought bits for our two boys.

My aim was firstly to save money and secondly for eveyone to receive nice presents from us that are not run-of-the-mill and can't be easily picked up in a shop. This board has been fantastic in helping me achieve this. I've made flannel cupcakes, flannel reindeer, yule logs, bath salts in jars, journal jars, 365 facts in jars, door hangers, cross stitch picture, cross stitch coasters, bought plain calendars and stuck own photos on... Other things I'm planning are old-fashioned sweetie caddies, hot chocolate or coffee in a mug (mug with chocolate/coffee sachets and a handmade coaster).

If you'd like any more detail about any of this please let me know, all ideas have been nicked/discussed on this board!

    Good luck.
