Loft insulation?

Hi
Just wondering what sort of loft insulation everyone is using as ours need to be re-newed not having sorted it out over the years as we have never had to ~ but now it's a must as the stuff we have now has been down for years and surely the new stuff is much more warmer ~ so which do I buy any suggestions? We have a terraced house only us and next door and the loft is not very big as we are unable to store anything up there ~ so are going to get this sorted ASP!!!

  • The current recommend amount is about 11 inches deep. I don't think age has an effect and can't answer your other q's - sorry

The old insulation does tend to compact over time so less air will be trapped and thus less efficient than if it was new. Plus standards have changed and they recommend more now than before

Get whatever's cheapest. They'll all do pretty much the same job.

You still may find it takes a couple of years to break even. If you already have any insulation at all, topping it up to 11 inches makes surprisingly little difference.
  • Last year B&Q were doing the knauf space blanket stuff, for buy one get one free i brought enough and did all my loft with it, just putting it over the the original stuff in the joists, this gave me a total of 270mm depth and boy what a difference it made last year to the upstairs. it is easer to lay as the insulation is wrapped and a silver foil material is on the bottom to reflect heat back down. About this time of year when they start puttting it in the shops.

Wickes are doing space blankets on BOGOF, about £14 for two, but they don't look very big.

I would hang on just a bit as the Government is due to make some announcement next week about this, whether it will suit your circumstances is anyone's guess, but you never know

I have just got eaga to do my loft (and cavity walls), they charged less than it would have cost me to just buy the stuff from Focus. Plus I didn't have to get it home and then spend three weeks scratching after I had fitted it !!
  • I'd recommend Eco-Wool, personally.

You can take or leave the claims that it has a very low carbon footprint since it is made from recycled plastic bottles.

Its key advantage is that it is completely safe to lay, unlike other stuff. It handles and feels just like the fluffy filler from winter coats or furniture - you don't need gloves or masks to lay it and it cuts with a strong pair of scissors.

Was available from B&Q when I put it in my loft last autumn. Cost-wise, it's about the same as regular insulation.

I would like to echo this. I live in the Kirklees Council area, and slowly but surely they are making here way round every home offering FREE loft and cavity wall insulation, as well as free enegy saving lightbulbs & a carbon dioxide alarm.

It might be worth checking with your local council for spending your pennies.
This space is available to rent... :D
