I know there was a thread on one of the forums saying that theres a number you can phone at sony, regardless of what is wrong with it they will pick it up and drop you one off in its place, i think the one they drop off is refurbished but having said that they might only repair the one you have which basically means the one you have is refurbished. If you have no look at argos search the forums your bound to find it somewhere. If this link works have a look
Free Replacment PSP or PS3 even out of warranty with Sony

Your contract is with Argos, not Sony. You need to contact Argos and ask them to sort a suitable solution for this problem.0

This has been addressed before.
Argos is not passing the problem on to the consumer, it is because certain manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft won't deal with retailers directly, they ask us to give their number to customers and they will solve the issues directly. If you want Argos to solve the problem then all the duty manager of the store may do is take the console and ring the number. I've given this number out numerous times and have not personally seen anyone come back with complaints about it.
Hope this helps[DISCLAIMER: Any posts made by myself are my opinions and do not represent my employer]

Under the sales of goods act 1979 says that the retailer, not the manufacturer, is responsible for sorting out any problems with any goods they have sold. It does not state in the SOGA that Sony/Microsoft goods are excempt. If the customer has not objection with dealing with the retailer then that is up to them. But Argos have the duty under the law to deal with this.0 -

That's fine, but sometimes people translate this as "if Argos won't send it off I get an automatic refund/replacement" which is not the case. What you're saying is absolutely correct I don't disagree, I'm just saying that in cases such as this that it would be easier for the customer to have Sony deal with the issue directly, rather than Argos sending it off for upto 21 working days, if it was possible for Argos to send them off.
Like I said originally if the customer refused to deal with Sony then it may be the case that either the manager would sort it by ringing the number and getting Sony to come to the store, which would probably take longer!![DISCLAIMER: Any posts made by myself are my opinions and do not represent my employer]

My DH PS3 broke rang Sony and they gave a fab service a new one by courier.0

Also if hes downloaded updates via internet to PS3 that could be the problem as well. Not sure if Sony have sorted out this problem now though.0

I have contacted the manufacturer directly on the number supplied in post #3. A replacement will be sent on Tuesday......a re-con unit by the sounds of it. Thank you to all who replied to the thread and it appears you are all quite right. It is possible to seek redress from the retailer, but it is usually quicker, and easier to circumvent them and go straight to the manufacturer.
Groovygirl, my lado was attempting to set up online gaming. He never succeeded, but the console never worked after that. Sony claim that the offending update has been withdrawn, but it seems a little curious. I will tell him to avoid online gaming / updates for the time being.0
