I have contacted the manufacturer directly on the number supplied in post #3. A replacement will be sent on Tuesday......a re-con unit by the sounds of it. Thank you to all who replied to the thread and it appears you are all quite right. It is possible to seek redress from the retailer, but it is usually quicker, and easier to circumvent them and go straight to the manufacturer.

Groovygirl, my lado was attempting to set up online gaming. He never succeeded, but the console never worked after that. Sony claim that the offending update has been withdrawn, but it seems a little curious. I will tell him to avoid online gaming / updates for the time being.

Just to let you know, I was told I would get a re-con psp replacement but it wasnt, It was brand shiny new. I guess they say that as some replacements are. Maybe you will be lucky and get a new ps3!!

My son's PS3 has stopped working (won't load games). It was bought on 04/12/07 instore (Bury Centre). Who do I contact, Argos or manufacturer?

    Many thanks.

My advice, if argos are messing you about and they still have the version you bought on sale, buy another then switch the consoles and take it back for a full refund.

    This has been addressed before.
Argos is not passing the problem on to the consumer, it is because certain manufacturers such as Sony and Microsoft won't deal with retailers directly, they ask us to give their number to customers and they will solve the issues directly. If you want Argos to solve the problem then all the duty manager of the store may do is take the console and ring the number. I've given this number out numerous times and have not personally seen anyone come back with complaints about it.

    Hope this helps :D

this is not true of all retailers,my xbox 360 broke earlier this year, would not read discs, not the 3 red lights,i had had it for 10 months and bought it from GAME,i phoned my local game for advice on what to do and the told me to bring it in and they would swap it for a new one, which in turn has another years warranty on it and its the new hdmi version into the bargain

Don't do that, this is a fraudulant method, ignore suggestions like this.

GAME is a specialist entertainment retailer so they may have the knowledge to know what can and can't be repaired, or it may just be their policy.

That's fine, but sometimes people translate this as "if Argos won't send it off I get an automatic refund/replacement" which is not the case.

Oh yes it is the case - if Argos can't or won't deal - customer is entitled to claim a refund from Argos - clear as day, end of story.
  • sony very good at sorting out any probs very efficient too and quick.argos by law should change it if its within 28 days.

Nope it is far from the case. Argos, and indeed all reatailers, are entitled to send it off to be repaired, but if you read all the comments above you will see that Sony offers a fast exchange/repair service with little complaint. If the customer wants the Argos store to send it off so be it, but all Argos may do is send get the courier to come to the store to pick the console up and send the replacement/repaired unit back to the store where the customer will have to travel back when there is a perfectly good home collection service in place.
Read again, it's not that Argos won't deal with it it's that it is easier for the customer to deal with Sony directly. Again I have given this number out numerous times and have never had anyone come back and complain.

Argos's policy is if it is within 30 days then they will replace or refund a faulty item (subject to inspection/testing in store where possible). After 30 days then it will be repaired, if no repair available a replacement, if no replacement available, a refund. It depends on the amount of time you have had the item.

  • Our PS3 stopped reading discs with the 4.42 update, so we waited patiently for weeks for another update which we hoped would sort it. Time was marching on and it's warranty runs out in October, so I popped into Zavvi to see what they had to say about it. The guy there said I'd be best to contact Sony myself, and that they would probably send out a disc to update the console, but if I didn't get any joy, Zavvi would return the PS3 for me to have it repaired by Sony.

I just phoned Sony on their customer careline, and after answering a few questions was told that our replacement will be here on Wed 17th!

I'm one very happy customer, and have to say that the service recieved from both Zavvi and Sony are excellent!!
    skint but in luv :kisses2:
