I've got one and it's rarely used. It's mainly used by my eldest son to make porridge some mornings, as it's easier for him than boiling milk in a pan (he's only 8!).

I don't like cooking in it as I can never get it right. Food is cold, so I stick it in for a tiny bit longer then it's overcooked. Even defrosting goes to far and food starts cooking round the edges, so I plunge well wrapped food in a sink of hot water if I need it quick.

I've tried reheating meals, but they are always too hot in places but still cold in others.

    Cooker every time for me!

My Mam melts chocolate for cakes in hers and always gets it overheated so it gets lumpy, but still insists it's less hassle than using a bowl over a pan of hot water
Here I go again on my own....

I think I would be pleased to regain that worktop space. OH uses it most for making his porridge (5am on early shift) so when our last one died it was he who insisted we get a new one.

I only use it for frozen peas and making the chickens' porridge. Wouldn't cook our food in it 'cos everything tastes bettter to me cooked 'properly'!
  • hi ,
thanks to all of you who replied.
i always cook in my gas oven or grill but i can never time it all to cook together :o and as there are 7 of us at the mo,it's tricky to get a hot meal on the table all in one go!!!!!!!
well that was ruined by lending ex oh £2450 to move out!!!!!! now estimate 21st march 2006hoping to be debt free by end of feb 2006 - fingers crossed !!
  • I heavily use mine..... as a shelf. It houses my kettle toaster and spice rack. :rotfl:

I occasionally use it for defrosting meat if im in a big hurry or if im making microwave popcorn which tbh i cant remember the last time i did.

Sometimes it comes into use if im making a big sunday dinner and ive ran out of hob space. Nuke some veggies in the mirco but then again it is very rare.

I mainly just use mine for defrosting stuff but if I work out what I want to defrost in good time I would rather defrost the 'natural' way. My parents microwave just sits in the corner of the kitchen and is never used at all.

You could try joining your local freecycle group https://www.freecycle.org and one might turn up.

  • Never had one - Don't want one. Been married 32 years & raised 3 children. I have health reservations as they all leak (microwave) radiation. They also encourage bad diets - convenience foods, etc.
If they were any good and safe, then why don't we have central heating powered by microwaves?
I would give the manufacturers an award for convincing everyone they really need one of these things!
    I must have saved a fair whack - say 4 or 5 m/w's @ sday £75 each.
    Nice to save.

Only use the microwave for veg really...and porridge when I can be bothered. Could live without it easily.

Like another poster never had and never wanted one.

I too am paranoid about the radiation leaking out but then I am paranoid type of person LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are only two of us but we manage I have steamer, slower cooker and gas cooker that is all I need to cook are meals with.

I am not even sure what I would use it for. If I had no other means of cooking then yes I might get one. But other wise never.

I use mine a lot, and would be lost without it. I mainly use it to heat up milk, for weetabix, ready brek etc, defrosting, cooking some veg, re heating tea (I always ask OH to bring me tea in bed at the weekend and then fall asleep and don't drink it!) , reheating left overs etc.

On the Discussion board there is a thread about not replacing a microwave in the workplace - there someone has said you can get one from Tesco for about £12!
