Hi Skint-chick.....just wanted to say that when my first microwave bit the dust I was convinced I wouldn't want to replace it. However, I never did find anything else that would defrost things quickly (never was organised enough to remember to get stuff out of freezer before work!) and the upshot was we bought a replacement! never realised just how much we did use it!
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!
  • Why don't you put your mw out of the way, in a cupboard somewhere, and see if you miss it or if you can happily live without it? That way if you find you really miss it, you would still have it to reinstall.
I have a combi microwave, and I couldn't live without it, but then I use the convection as much as the micro.

We have a Panasonic Combi. Best tool in the kitchen.

Baking, grilling, defrosting, reheating etc, etc.

Proper jacket potatoes in 14 Min's.

The OH was a bit timid with it at first but once you get your head around the instruction book it is magic.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • I started switching everything electrical off at the plug when it wasn't being used a few months back and it made me realise just how little we use the microwave so i am umming and ahhing about getting rid of ours too.

I don't use it for defrosting as it almost always cooks part of the meat while leaving the rest frozen and other than for milk for my cocoa I can't think what we use it for. Oh, melting butter too.

I think when I'm off on Thursday I shall put mine in the utility with view to it being resigned to the pantry or loft if it isn't missed.

We no longer have a microwave either. In some circumstances you do think "eh, would be really handy if we still had a microwave" but everything can be done in other ways anyway and on the whole we don't miss it at all :)

  • My microwave died last year and I haven't bothered to replace it. I do not miss it one little bit. In fact its a good thing its gone because now I am not tempted to make micro melty cheese sandwiches or buy cruddy supermarket pasties or pie for quick heating. As for defrosting - its a case of thinking ahead a bit more, or if you must defrost things faster, sitting a container in warm water helps.

  • We never bothered replacing ours and I don't miss it in the slightest. We don't have room for one either.

We take stuff out of the freezer the night before and use the hob to reheat stuff. (Or do oven bakes in the oven, but I'd have done that anyway.)

I don;t want to use it more really as I am not convinced they are entirely healthy, ?

Why not? When I was pregnant my MIL got me a radiation detection thingy cos she thought my babies would be born with extra limbs becasue The bump was on the same level as the microwave but the needles on it moved more when her mobile phone rang beside me. :rotfl:

I have a defrosting plate which works really well as I hate microwave defrosted meat. ;)

I haven't had one for 5 years. I don't miss it at all.I also don't have room and I feel that, although they have their uses, if you can cook properly, you don't need one.
  • a good way for defrosting in a hurry is to put the item (wrapped up well ) in some cold water - makes defrosting much quicker but you still need a while for a hunk of meat/mince etc.
