    hi all.
my microwave has blown up and i am broke so can't replace it just now- don't want to make debt worse !!!

how on earth do you manage after 12 yrs of using one ?
    any help appreciated
    many thanks,
    louise

I used to have one - but gave it away

Take this as the opportunity to try different ways of cooking or if you normally use ready prepared meals - why not have a go at old style home cooking - there are some really great cheap home made recipes here which dont use a microwave.

    Good luck

Errr.....quite easily actually. I deliberately got rid of the one I had when I read the information about what a health hazard they are...

The thought literally never crosses my mind to think "I wish I could do (so and so) with a microwave)".

    I wouldnt have one as a gift.:D

No microwave for about 5 years now, don't miss it at all. Would I ever buy one? No, I really can't see it - much prefer slow food and never buy ready meals.

Easily. I just cook on the cooker/bake in the oven. Ready meals are used very rarely though.

I've not got a microwave. I have to ask how you think you couldn't manage without one.

I generally cook from scratch using a cooker and oven.

How about roasting some parsnips, carrots and sweet potato in the oven for 45 minutes along with a portion of quiche?

Even if you use ready meals you can heat them up in the oven (I bought some once because they were pretty much giving them away).

  • The-Biff.......if we had central heating powered by microwaves we'd all cook !!!! I agree though that there are some health risks but they are minimal, I think people harm themselves much worse with the type of things they consume and many other things I won't go into. As for encouraging bad diets I don't agree with that, if your going to eat a bad diet you will happily do it without a microwave, you can stick ready meals in the oven too.

I have a microwave but don't use it much, only for heating milk or the odd time I re-heat my dinner. I could happily live without it.

Like another poster never had and never wanted one.

Well since I replied in this thread things have changed. In feb 2007 we got a microwave.

My husband had a stroke. And I now don't trust him with a gas cooker. He uses it to heat things up with.

So he can something hot in the middle of the day when I am at work.

I use mine almost exclusively for heating up my grain bag and dd's wheatie bear.

I do use it for melting butter, chocolate and defrosting finely chopped veg but I would easily manage to do without it for these purposes.

I'd get rid of it if it weren't for the grain bag and bear.
  • I wouldn't want to do without mine, even though my kitchen is very samll and the microwave is very large. Probably the first one ever made. It is at least 30 years old.
If I fancy a steamed pudding or a jacket potato i don't want to be witing hours for it to cook in the oven. Or watching over it on the hob. I haven't got the time anyway. I do try to get everyone to eat at the same time, but it is not always possible. so it is very handy for warming up athe odd dinner without drying it out, or again standing watching it on a saucepan. Life is too short.
