Most pre packed meat in super markets is packed in an inert gas - this stops it oxidising (going brown) - it the packaging/barrier is breached, the oxidising will start - but just because meat is oxidised doesn't mean it's not fit to eat. Another thing you will find with beef that has been frozen and then thawed is that it will smell 'different' - almost sweet - again, it is fine to eat.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

All these problems with supermarket meat! I really would urge anybody who has a local butcher's shop within reasonable distance to use it. The supermarkets have so many customers they don't care if somebody is dissatisfied. Your local butcher knows nearly all his customers. He can't afford to sell dodgy or stale meal because he knows he'll either lose a customer or "get it in the neck". Their meat is better quality. Your butcher won't "hack it to death" and you get exactly what you want rather than having to shuffle along supermarket shelves to find something which exactly resembles either the quantity or the quality you need.
  • Sounds like the meat has been left sitting around at room temperature before being chilled down properly. Not much Environmental Health can do unless they go on a routine inspection and catch them with trolley loads of meat sat around not in the chillers in the warehouse.

I've had it happen to me with vac packed cheese with mould on it weeks before expiry date. Suffice to say Tesco refunded.
  • Had similar problems with Asda's spare ribs, took some back recently as the smell was terrible, got a full refund and a £2 gift card.

  • Stack it high and sell it cheap
When it's gone off, throw it on th heap

I have had the same problem countless times. Mostly though with their chicken, and not even the value stuff. In fact I have got some in the fridge now which I was intending to use this evening but it stinks! The use by date is 2 days away. I usually find that if I take it back they will replace it. I did ask them last time if they would refund the petrol costs for returning it. But I think that was going a bit too far. Worth the try though!

If it's happened countless times, why do you still buy their chicken and/or meat?
nothing to see here, move along...

Tesco meat is very dodgy and this often happens. Drives me mad but my only alternative locally is Waitrose which I can;t afford, or the butcher, ditto.
