What happens when a cat is put to sleep?

Hi again everyone - just wanted to post a bit of an update ...
Sadly my Doodles was put to sleep at 6pm tonight as I had suspected he might be. The x-rays/ultrasound revealed 2 tumours, a massive one in his liver and a smaller one in his bladder. Both were unoperable apparently and he was in quite some discomfort.
The end really was as quick and as peaceful as you had reassured me
he already had a catherter in where they had been giving him fluids so he didn't have to be given another needle. He went very gently and let out a little purr as his last breath - almost sounded like a sigh of relief.
So really wanted to say a very big thank you to everyone that took the time to post a response to me, as I found them not only informative but gave me peace of mind before I walked into the surgery.
Am crying my eyes out writing this, so will sign off for the moment. Thanks xx0 -
Hi Doodles. The pain when we lose our beloved pets is the price we pay for love, however you did the right thing for your beloved puss. When I had mine put to sleep I cried cos they are family.
What helped me was putting a photo of them where I could see it, somehow the house didn't seem as empty then.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Hi, just wanted to send you sympathy, we are going through the same thing at the moment, but with a dog.
My sisters dog was rushed to the emergency vets at 1.30 this morning, he hasn't been well for a couple of weeks, this is the 3rd time in 2 weeks he has been to the vet. The last 2 times the vets said he had a chest infection and have given him tablets, but earlier this morning his breathing had become erratic and he was really gasping for breath, he has been kept in overnight so they can do x-rays and give him oxygen and put him on a drip, but it's not looking too good as they think he could have a tumour on his lung or his heart, only the x-ray will tell us this, so we are preparing for the worse.
Sorry for hijacking the thread, but just had to get this off my chest as I am sobbing my heart out while I am typing this.0 -
Doodles - Well done on being brave and getting through it - I hope you and your family are coping ok today. It will get easier with time.

I feel for you doodles, but not sure this forum is the appropriate place for your post.
I found it rather alarming/upsetting when I initially saw the thread title, could've done without it.0
