There's one mum at DD1's primary school who drives her DS 200 yards from the house to school. At first I thought she maybe drives off to work afterwards but she doesn't work and drives the 200 yards back again. Sometimes when it's busy she has to find a space another 200 yards past the school. Crazy.
Aw - don't get me going on this subject........ perlease..

I've had about six weeks of good driving to work - and the last two days have been bl**dy hell.

Doesn't matter what route I take - I pass at least four schools. It is dreadful.

Children don't know how to walk anywhere and don't learn 'the green cross code' or anything - and besides, they may get wet if it rains. .....

    Started me off now......... :o

  • Well IF, as more than one person has said, modern components are designed to handle repeated usage of this kind and IF, over a year, this would equal say c300 x c6 x c30seconds of fuel use then over said year this has saved me c900 minutes or 15 hours of said fuel use...

... which is something I'll certainly go for, especially IF it also helps with noise and pollution.

A lot of IFs, I know, but it looks more or less right.

Well IF, as more than one person has said, modern components are designed to handle repeated usage (THEY'RE NOT) of this kind and IF, over a year, this would equal say c300 x c6 x c30seconds of fuel use then over said year this has saved me c900 minutes or 15 hours of said fuel use...(IT HASN'T, BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T FACTORED IN THE START UP FUEL USED EVERY TIME)

A lot of IFs, (YOU'VE NOT ADDED IN COST OF EXTRA PART FAILURES) I know, but it looks more or less right.

It doesn't. Plus by making every car wait that extra couple of seconds, they've all used more fuel, thereby polluting the atmosphere that little bit more.

I've driven a Mini with the Auto Start Stop feature and the engine restarts so quickly as you dip the clutch it's ready to go as you bring the clutch up, so it's pretty seamless and you never hold up cars behind you.
As to fuel saving, it does improve the urban cycle MPG on the official EU test, therefore lower CO2 and so lower VED and company car tax levels - which is a big part of the motivation for the manufacturer to do it. Whether it improves "real world" MPG or not is hard to say.
Whether it wears out the starter motor quicker or not destroying fuel cost saving in the long run is of no concern to the original most likely business user of the car who sells it on once the warranty has expired. As long as it lasts longer than the warranty the original manufacturer is not concerned either.
It's all about the short term and arguably short sighted practice of getting the total cost of ownership down inside the 36 month warranty period in the current CO2 / taxation and fuel cost climate.

BMW efficient dynamics braking regeneration - it's only charges the battery when your not pressing the accelerator which saves on fuel, around 6% to 8% if I remember rightly from when I read an article on it in BMW Magazine.

    Meanwhile.........

I'm hating my daily commute........... stupid women, lazy, with lazy overfed children blocking roads, parking on pavements. If I won the lottery, I would buy them all a dictionary so that they could look up the definition of the word 'walk'.

AND...... have you noticed that they are soooo worried about their precious little 'babies', that they won't think twice about 'their' babies safety as they quite happily chat on their mobile phones whilst driving and trying (badly) to turn corners or even drive in a straight line... driving, vehicles that are generally far too big for them to control at the best of times let alone whilst clutching their phones.. And they drive these precious children to school because they say it is safer than letting them walk - oh give me a break!
    I'm off again........
