Switching off engine at traffic lights..?

... and other places where you're brought to a prolongued stop?

Is it legal?

Does it save money?

Am I not right that it's actually required by law in Germany under pollution/noise legislation?

    Legal - don't know
    Germany - don't know

But saving money? Wouldn't have thought so - I would think that to keep restarting engine would use more petrol.

Yes it's legal, yes it does save money.

Yes, I believe it is. I think the Green Party introduced it, that's proportional representation for you. Certainly you have to turn your engine off a rail crossings where you could be waiting for several minutes, not so sure about traffic lights though.

I suppose there's gotta be a break even/benefit point in terms of saving fuel. It would vary for each car but more importantly how long you would have sat at idle. I tend to switch mine of at certain traffic lights where I know it takes about 30 seconds +

The new BMW range has auto stop-start feature. Even if it's for a few seconds. Basically, as soon you as you put it into neutral and release the clutch pedal it shuts off... and then on again when you press the clutch.

I used to have a car that also turned itself of at lights.....and corners, roundabouts, hills and every bloody where else. That was if it even started in the first place.
  • Save money on fuel, and spend money on starter motors. Nice.
