you could always use NO anti-virus software- like I have been doing for years. My computer just grinds to a halt with anything other than NOD32, and even that is dreadful.
No infections on 3 computers for half a decade. Dont belive the hype about viruses- only inexperienced users get them
Right I've got my deck chair and some popcorn :D

I'll grant you there is too much hype aimed at having everyone buy all sorts of security, but like everything, the other extreme is no better. You only need to be hit once with the wrong virus if you online shop or bank.
As for only inexperienced users, I'd say that's as naive as it is arrogant.

If you are a Barclays customer, you can get a 12 month's subscription to Kaspersky for free.

I use on several pc's Trend Micro internet security 2008 licensed for 3 pc's, I also use spybot and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • If you are willing to pay for AV software you can't go wrong with Kaspersky - hourly virus database updates, light on system resources...

If you don't want to pay then AVG or Avast are your options.

  • Paid, I would go for Eset or Kaspersky

Free, I would go for Antivir or Avast.

I personally use Eset Smart Security. Very very light on resources and excellent detection rates.

Symptomatic of something very wrong with your PC then. Perhaps it is infected. :rotfl:

  • Kaspersky is fine as long as you only have one PC or laptop. I have known it cause problems for people who have a couple of machines networked (wireless or otherwise). It tends to drop connections it finds too slow. I have found Avast far less memory hungry than AVG too.
As using no anti-virus software...check the terms and conditions for any online banking and you will see that it states that you must have AV software. You could end up liable for losses caused by not having AV software. As there are free AV options to choose from it seems the better option than hoping you don't turn out to be an in-experienced user with a bill from your bank.

even if you have av software and a virus gets in and gets your card details you are still liable for it anyway arent you? well maybe not if it is a credit card but if you use a debit card you would. i certainly cant see a shop refunding money paid from your card for something a fraudster has purchased with your card.
