I agree - time to take the internet plunge with Crucial. Great service - it usually arrives the following day and the quality is good. Once I ordered two memory cards but the box only contained one. Rang up - they said they would have to check stock, after all I could be lying (no they didn't actually say this). Second card arrived the following day.0

Download CPU-Z and run it, it'll give you the brand, type, speed, timings etc of the RAM installed0

For laptop memory I'd recommend Orca LogicIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

And as for you Tradetime PC #+*'*' indeed, hang your head:D that's a swear word in our house.
Having said that, to the OP, I suspect you will be installing this for your uncle, so you might as well order it for him too, thus removing the stigma of online shopping if price is best there.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

It is a good idea to open up the pc first, to see what slots are available. If all are full, you will have to scrap an existing chip to fit a new one.
Also, his computer may actually be dying. Memory might help but there could be other problems.
If the PC is more than 5 or 6 years old, it might be time to consider another one, new or used.
And yes, good results from Crucial. Also Orca Logic.0 -

The tools mentioned will say what slots are available etc anyway. I think the fact it is running on only 256 MiB for XP would certainly be enough of a reason for it to appear to be very sluggish etc.

Or, CPU-Z, tells you exactly what is in each slot without having to open up the caseAlso, his computer may actually be dying. Memory might help but there could be other problems.

Giving the inside a clean, some new RAM and a reformat/reinstallation might give the computer a new lease of life without spending more than £20 just yet0
