Hi,
I used to post regularly on the grocery challenge, but when I started thinking about the nutritional profile of our food, and taking our budget down to a quite extreme level, I decided to start a seperate thread to talk about my challenge so I didn't clutter up the GC with my waffle.
I still pop in a lot for ideas.
Bouncing off bigmummas idea, above, I like the way that squeaky's sig has links to a lot of the useful indexes and threads.
I wonder if perhaps some of the stalwarts of the GC thread could be persuaded to add those useful links (for GC bods!) to their sig, so there's no need to keep mentioning them, just every time you post, we'll all be reminded of the useful links.
Just an idea. Keep up the hard work folks!:D

I like BMF's idea of repeating relevant links through the thread. I know (from experience!) that newbies rarely stop to read the first post - think its because we're all so mad keen to get going on the GC that we get carried away! :j
weez - no links in sigs allowed except for board guides; I enquired recently about putting a link to the Complete Cookery Collection (which I'm indexing) in my sig and I cant do it; there has to be control of what's in our the sigs of course, else we could soon be inundated with ads and maybe links to nasties
I've thought about putting a short sentence and link to the Complete Cookery Collection at the end of my GC posts (and maybe other threads where its relevant); not sure if this will be allowed really, but its worth a shot I think;
For those of us who are puter savvy its a doddle to navigate the OS threads, and search for topics but not everyone finds it so easy and I think any help we can give in finding useful threads and topics etc would be well worthwhile.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

. I think the daily thread only works for people who are here daily posting on it, ive popped on a couple of time and not had a clue what people are on about, it feels a bit like gate crashing someones coffee morning :rotfl:

I agree Jackie,no matter how friendly the daily thread is,I think unless you are able to pop in daily you miss the relevant bits.
Also as someone said the GC does have continuity.
Hoist by its own success.

FWIW.... I would like to post on the GC and have almost done so for the last few months but have been put off by the chat. I now just keep a note of my target and spending at home. If the GC thread was simply targets and spends I would be happy to join in.
I agree with you...I used to post regularly, but now the thread is so huge that me posting my spending feels almost insignificant!!! I'm only able to skim it generally (and always have to apologise at the start of a post that I haven't read the rest!:rotfl: )
It now seems full of recipie ideas etc etc...which, whilst very helpful, could be posted in more relevant places (recipie thread etc) I do love the community feel of the thread/board though...but I think it's maybe lost it's focus a little (don't shoot me down...please:rotfl: :rotfl: )
I don't mind a litle chat, but I think it needs to go back to being about spending and how people are getting on in terms of meeting their own challenge...as others have said, the daily chat thread is the place for more general stuff (imho.)20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

Hi rosieben,
That's precisely why links in signatures were removed, because spammers were using links in their signatures.
Can I ask if you contacted the team about putting a link to the Complete Cookery Collection in your sig?

I'm not trying to be inflammatory here, but how could folks say how they are getting on in the GC without something that another poster would deem as 'chat'? This isn't coming out at all how I'm thinking it; perhaps of I try a "for instance".....
I went shopping yesterday & spent £62:31. They had stuffed crocodile snout on BOGOF so of course I had to get white chocolate-dipped elephant nose drips to go with it cuz Aunt Joe is allergic to cocoa.
To me, that is a relevance to why I spent so much yesterday, but to X this would be chat.....or have I misread the situation again? Because I've sourced these ingredients it may be of some help to another poster or prompted a "hmm..never thought of that'...so where else would you post it?
As to the Recipe thread, that too is huge but perhaps a GC Recipes thread would solve that.

Hi Pink
yes I did drop a pm to admin and they said no to the link, which is what I expected; I do understand the need for the ruling and happy to conform.
I'm not sure if there would be any objection to me just putting a link in a last sentence on my GC posts but I may try that.
One of the reasons I'm indexing the Complete Cookery Collection is that I expressed a worry that so many recipes were just getting lost in past threads. I'm sure people just don't know how much information exists here or else don't know how to find it.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I must admit i find post like
"spent 2.50 today " irrelevant what are we expected to do with this info ??
However "spent £2.50 on CDM which is reduced to 50p a bar at Mr T's" is relevant
Not sure if flicking through posts isn't the best method of "filtration"*****

I agree with shaz mum, posts like 'i have spent' mean nothing to any one else other than the person who spent the money, but posts saying about offers etc are useful to every one.
when I was a newbie to the GC back in July, I found the whole site, thread confusing, over whelming, I would have found it useful if there was say when someone joins they are asked to go and read say page 1, then they know where the recipes are, what say Mr A, Mr T etc etc mean, may be instructions on what to post and what not to post, this would save a lot of posts.
GC updated on what people have spent I think would be better on the GC thread, and 'chat' on another, then if you want to join in with the chat you can, if not then just go Gc thread.
I also agree people like my self are not aware how much info is on this site, or where to find it.
I now am just posting my spends for the week (once a week) and asking questions about cooking.
I dont know where else to ask questions.
good luck

I think the GC is a good place to ask questions, cammumof3, because then the answers are available to so many other people who may be new to the site, iyswim
when the first post blurb of GC is updated, can it include links to the Complete OS index, and some of the more relevant collections - I'm thinking Bread, Slow Cooker, Complete Cookery + ? ....
over to you, Pink and PP... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
