I thought the GC (thread) usually runs from 1st to end of the month  but people join in as and when it best suits their budget. Some people get paid mid-month so they would go from 15th to 14th, some people work a weekly budget, some do 4 weeks or 5 weeks dependent on the weeks in the calendar month.

I really think its best left to run with the calendar month; tbh, anything else is likely to cause way too much confusion. ;)

I know you post the new thread a few days ahead of month start, and that's great because it gives us all a chance to get revved up :D

    edited to say:
sorry Pink, I just read your last post and I see what you're getting at

  • Hi Denise,

Thanks for that. :A If I was going to move it, it would probably be only a couple of days earlier...ie the 25th? Again it's up to the regulars and we will go with the general consensus.

    You behave? Some chance! ;):D

Ha ha, honest, I will try. ;)

I think the 25th would be good as it allows people to join in gradually, those that have already finished can then join the Oct GC, and then people can gradually add on as they get there, they can still read the Oct GC (I think some don't realise they can subscribe without posting?), but keep posting on the Sept GC - sometimes the beginning of the month is the worst time for catching up as it is when people start posting their budgets and is also when most people join, so this could be the bit that puts them off - does that make sense?

Rosieben - take your coat off, we need you here...:D

Not that I'll be taking part for a while, but I think most people that do the GC monthly like to start it on the last friday of the month as thats when they get paid ;)

  • I get paid 4 weekly, so my payday moves through the month. My tax credits are also 4 weekly but in a different week! So I've always done my grocery challenge in whole calender months otherwise I'd be all over the place.:rotfl:

I don't want to do it weekly, as I tend have a big on-line shop delivered every now and then, with all the bulky and heavy things, which I can then use over several weeks. That would wreck a weekly budget:eek:

I'm usually one of the last to move to the new thread, but don't have a problem with that, so long as you leave the old one open till the end of the month.

    Hi lingojingo,

The older grocery challenge threads never get closed so you can post on them as long as you want to. :)

I only thought of moving the date for the start of the challenge a few days earlier because I have read that many people have finished the September challenge already and are beginning their challenge for October when the new thread isn't due to start until Sunday.

I'm afraid that unless anyone really objects a fixed date (eg the 28th of the month) is better for me....I'm an organisational disaster and would never, ever remember the last Friday in the month until it was over. :o

On the other hand if the start date is working for everyone as it is, then there's no need to change it at all. :D

  • I think different people have different dates depending on their circumstances. As long as people know when the next one is avaliable they can decide when to move to it. Personally - hubby gets paid wages weekly, working/child tax credit weekly, child benefit 4 weekly.
So I tend to run my GC from monday nearest beginning of month making some months 4 weeks others 5 weeks ie sept =1st to 28th sept /Oct =29/9 to 2/11!! I think whichever month the bulk of my GC is in is the one it belongs to. I understand those who get paid mid month have more of a dilemma as to which month they should be on.

I only joined Gc in May having lurked in the background for a month or so, this was the first forum/thread I had ever joined/ encountered so I didn't realise there were separate recipe threads etc. Amazed to find 1000's of pages when I clicked forum button!!!!!! I think others probably didn't/don't realise either, so I find guidelines helpful at beginning of thread and links to other places that may help answer our question more relevantly is/would be good.
But I think it has spiralled out of control partly because so many people have joined wanting to save money, and like me didn't realise the wealth of info already on other threads. I hope we can all be sensible and try together to keep the GC going in a way that is accessible and friendly. It has certainly helped me get on top of my grocery spending, even though I post very little I enjoy reading what I can.
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.

  • I'd be happy with the 25th as its usually around my new month.

I do mine weekly (think I've said that before) but to be honest it doesn't matter to me cos my family is paid at all different times, so nothing suits me :D

I've included the kids cos they pay keep, so it's part of the budget -

At one point, me and master troo were paid weekly, mr troo on the 20th of each month and miss troo was every four weeks. I also get money every four-six weeks from my small biz but the amount varies.

Then miss troo was paid weekly, everyone else stayed the same.

Then I was made redundant so no pay, mr and master troo stayed the same and miss troo is about to start a new job and I have no idea how often she's paid.

No wonder I have a headache.

    lol.
