Barclays, charged me over £3.23 overdrawn but shouldnt of been

Barclays have charged me for being £3.23 overdrawn but given me 2 lots of £22 charges.

Before you start on that I should be in credit

I had paid £350 cash in Friday at 3pm, had £400 from selling old stuff and £120 in today from work

The charge was due to a direct debit that came out early but their excuse is I dont have the cleared funds

The bank transfer from Thursday though in, doesnt show on the system yet therefore I got the charge.

The £350 I paid in, was told as after 3pm Friday isnt counted on system till monday

Same for works money, was told i takes 24-48 hours to show up on system.

Had no problem in past!

I find this as disgusting as I have never been overdrawn with them in past and the branch were rude and unhelpful just saying "you were overdrawn, TOUGH" and spoke in a stroppy voice and said why do I want to complain when I know I was overdrawn

Phoned complaints department and got same except they claim they sent a letter 2 months ago therefore I got it and agreed to the new terms.

I said ok im closing my account then and they were rude and said "why do you want to do that" and I said if they were petty over £3 when they keep my money for days before crediting it to my account then theres no real customer service

I said I would tell all my friends and family over the treatment and 2 friends who were going to open an account with them and advise them not to and the advisor was rude again and said why would I do that, and im making something of nothing

Just wanted advice to see if I did right thing

DDs don't "come out early". They come out on the day that the initiator sets for them to come out.

If the initiator made an error, then reclaim the charges from them.

But if the DD actually came out on the correct date, it's your fault that you banked the cash after 3pm on Friday. Money has to be in the account by close of previous banking day - so before 3pm on Friday for a Monday DD.

If your salary is paid in by BACS, it arrives in your account 2 working days after they pay it. That's not Barclays' fault, it's the way BACS works.

So I don't understand your assertions about Barclays "hanging on to your money before crediting it to your account".

And probably nor did the people you attempted to complain to at Barclays.

Actually it did come out early, and the salary was sent Wednesday but always comes in Monday, The direct debit came out a week early.

Dont know what you are getting at by the close of the previous bank day as they close at 5pm and it seems different banks have different "cut off" times, i.e Halifax is 3.30

Ironically the day before I paid I put £20 into my RBS account at 4.45(AT closing time) and it credited right away.

So whats Barclays excuse for me not being able to take any money out.

And the direct debit came out today when there was funds in, but they didnt show.

Christ talk about picking and choosing.

I cant access ANY money from my account, as though it shows as there on the systems im told the cash machines take an extra day to show on the system

I was going on about how though I paid money in Friday I cant take it out till Wednesday and its CASH not a cheque

I know more than you think.

I was talking about so I pay money in Friday, what happens to it when its in Limbo, the bank has it but wont let me spend it. why does it take 5 days for me to be able to spend my own cash!

If the DD "came out early" that is not your bank's fault. That is down to the date set by the company requesting the funds. So go after them, not your bank.

Each bank can set its own cut-off time. Barclays choose to set 3pm. That's up to them and it's in your Ts & Cs. They don't need an "excuse".

This has nothing to do with the bank.

Who was the direct debit for? Because it's the company who took the direct debit a week early that you need to be chasing, NOT the bank.

You are aiming your frustation/anger at the wrong party here.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

When my elderly Mum & Dad went overdrawn by about £15 for a couple of days and incurred charges, I wrote a polite letter to the local branch, pointing out the situation and that they had been customers for many years and got a nice letter from the regional office saying that in the circumstances they'd decided to refund the charges.

However, if you've been aggressive and possibly rude to the bank staff, this advice may be too late.
I said ok im closing my account then
Have you closed your account then?

I personally think you acted too hastily, if you'd tried the 'sofly, softly' approach it may have worked better than having a go at them and threatening to bad mouth them to all and sundry.

Actually I wasnt agressive, I was polite as im a polite person I was nice,it was only when they got stroppy with me did I moan at them and even then I wasnt personally agressive nor spoke loudly just in a slightly annoyed tone

They were the ones that spoke in very rude tones of voices to me and loudly and made out im an idiot

Sigh I see you are thick skulled

Its the fact that I wont get my cash till the Wednesday that bothers me

And the fact that they have a big sign up saying 4.30 in my branch is the cut off time in the branch yet say 3pm which is the excuse, and it should be Tuesday at latest I can remove funds.

And even if it was 3pm and it wont be processed till Monday why doesnt it get credited to my account till Wednesday
Im surprised to see so much defense of the banks

I don't think it would be difficult to find a bank account better than Barclays.
You should be able to get money from switching, too.

It sounds like Barclays have played everything by the rules. And I think that's the problem. The rules in this case are harsh and they should use some discresion and refund you the charge.
The fact that they didn't either reflects them, or you, or both.

I would say definitely take your business elsewhere. But at the same time remember that the problem was yours (not paying the money in soon enough) or the other company's (taking the money too soon). And maybe hone up your complaining / negotiation skills.
This will probably, at one time or another, happen again - regardless of who you bank with.

Hold on, are you saying you paid in cash (just cash, not cash and cheques) into a current account late on a Friday (i.e. Monday morning) and you can't get it until Wednesday? That's terrible.

You really need to change banks.
Any reason why you wouldn't want to switch? If not, do it today.

You've been a bit unlucky there dekaspace. Sometimes you have ti take these events as life's little lessons, resolve never to let anyone do that to you again (by being really organised about your finances) and forget it.

If it makes you happy, change your account and make sure they are fully aware of the reasons why.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!
