I had to buy new hardware to get my pc running even though it met minimum specs and to get connected online. There were no new drivers for the "obsolete" working hardware and the manufacturers just point blank refused to bring out new drivers for the new OS and only supported their new range of hardware. The interface and the way things were layed out were quite different so there were plenty of people who complained about the complete change in things, and it did take a while to get used to things.

That was my experience of migrating from 98 to XP. Don't see why Vista's getting all the harsh comments. People seem to have such short memories. I've used Vista for work a bit and I've got no problems when I build my new pc to install Vista on it.

The only problem is it comes with Vista.Ive started looking at buying a copy of XP but am so confused by all the seemingly different versions, services packs and varying prices I find on amazon, pc world etc.

PC world for example offer Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2 for £89.99

Yet amazon offer what looks to be the same product for a massivly different price £189.48 (see link) . Surely with such a massive difference these cant be the same thing?

and then theirs this version XP Home, Service Pack 2 (link) on amazon. for just £57.95. Is this just an update rather than a full version?

Im so confused. Also is their much difference between Home and Pro versions?
The PC world version is just an upgrade and requires you to have an OS already installed to upgrade from (ie Win98, Win ME or Win2K) The first Amazon link is a full Retail version and the second amazon link is for an OEM version. (OEM versions are cheaper because they are not transferable to another machine once they are registered to one machine.
I agree with most, the compatibility issue will not affect the average home user. Where it can come into play is either with specialist software, and sometimes connecting to say, your work network which may be running non vista compliant applications.
As for XP pro, again for the average home user it offers no real advantages afaik the main difference is related to setting up networks

  • Just like to thank everyone for thier replies. I havnt really had any experience with Vista so have only had what ive heard to go by. Suprised to hear its been out for two years though, dosnt time fly?

Think ill give it a go and I guess I can always downgrade to XP at a later time if problems occur.

I still play quite a few old games (championship manager 01/02, age of empries 2, hotel giant etc) and that was my worry. Anyway I guess I wont know unless I try it.

    Thanks once again.

My sister got Vista laptop this year and she has had no probs at all, even connecting to her work as they've made the necessary changes. Unfortunately you might have a problem with you games, you could always run a VM with XP installed in it for those.

LOL sadly, no. I'm not a gamer as you might guess, and he did say old, not Crysis.

There you go then, I know little about games, and I thought it was The game, certainly all the techy gamers seems to be querying whether their new PC will play it on full settings

Crysis is one of the most demanding games in terms of hardware at the moment which is why people talk about it. As a game it's OK but not great.

I've had no issues with playing old games on Vista. Not that I've installed that many due to my ongoing addiction to Company of Heroes.

If you're concerned about particular games then half an hour on google should tell you if you will have problems.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
