yep, it's a lot of money just to 'survive' these days!

Your contents insurance is very high - have you checked out comparison sites? I got buildings and contents for £15 a month recently. Did it through Quido which works now out at about £7 a month with the cashback!

Is your rent average for where you are? Do you rent somewhere that is bigger and more expensive than what you actually need?

That's really high rent for property for two people, so the CT is high respectively.

Dh could walk to work (save on fuel costs), so we are paying for the location. The cheaper ones are too far and not feasible to walk.

Mine was £54 a month with the Halifax. We got a quote from Barclays for £420 and went back to Halifax and told them they weren't cost effective and we were thinking of switching. by the time we had taken off various things we would never claim for anyway and been given a loyalty bonus - my figure for contents and buildings is now £24 per month!:money: So check it out!

As well as quidco, in most areas Barclays offer you £50 if they can't save you money on your home insurance... It's well worth looking into. I'm mad with myself that we didn't do it sooner.

:money: Similarly BT and Broadband from Plus net - We will save a whopping £29 a month moving to Talk Talk and get an extra 30 gig of bandwidth!:D Unfortunately OH did it direct - otherwise could have got £40 from quidco!

I have been amazed at the savings you can make. The next thing I need to look at is life insurance, mortgage protection and critical illness - currently paying approx £112 a month just there!:o

    Here's ours:

(Round here £695 would rent you a one bed flat in a roughish area if you were lucky! )

MORTGAGE £746.19 (Going up in February as we went interest only for a while whilst we tackled our humongous debts)

COUNCIL TAX £155 (Going up in April. Band C Over 10 months. It would be £129.30 over 12 )

GAS & ELECTRIC £120 (and climbing. Our useage has gone down but our DD has had to go up £30. )

WATER £16.80 (meter - My local family members pay about twice this in their homes - I've been asking!)

    B&C INSURANCE £18.56

    =£1056.55

    Love Jacks xxx :D

PS Tiny three bed Victorian terrace in a less than salubrious area, family of four.

PPS I've just told my 20 yo working son that his contribution is going up! :D

  • At the moment, my own figures are:

Mortgage - £763 a month (come off fixed rate deal in March 09)
    Council Tax - £97 a month (over 12 months)
    Electricity - £37 a month (no gas)
    Contents - £12 per month
    Buildings - £100 per year

That's for a 2 bed flat in Edinburgh worth about £210K.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

    Mortgage - £970
    Council tax -£128
    Gas and electric -£135
    Contents and building- £24

4 bed, on the south coast no idea of house price as value has gone down!

But we are a family of 7 so £179 pcm per head.

Oh forgot water £28 so total £183 per head or 1281 total.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
