Thank you for telling me what you tip. I went today and had quite a major cut and restyle :D . Cost £19.50 and I tipped £2.50. Am really happy with my hair. In the last 3 years i've had my hair cut 3 times!! both for money reasons and as i'm growing it. I'm going to keep going to this hairdresser now as i like her. I'm thinking i may just tip £1.50 normally. It just seems such a low amount.
    Thanks
Charlie (with very new hair!!) :rotfl:

Between £2 - £5, i usually have the students let loose on my hair, tops up their money for the Friday night bacardi breezers
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

    I've been Money Tipped!
I always used to give 10% until my hairdresser told me that she'd ... just bought the salon / bought a new house / was having an extension / bought all her furniture from Next ... in which case I decided she was definitely better off than me and I needed the money more (I hope that doesn't sound mean but it was the furniture from Next that pushed me over the edge ...)
    That's Numberwang!

I don't tip my hairdresser at all. I hate tipping generally but do tip taxi drivers if they help me carry the shopping. I tend to tip only if they do something over and above their actual job.

Despite me being a tight cow my hairdresser has become a friend over the years and I do buy him a birthday present and Xmas present.

I always pay by card and never add a tip on to that payment. I love my hairdressers, she's mint and 'gets' me asking what i want so i always try to gie her what change i have. She gets my return business + £2 time tip usually, so if i dont tip one time cuz i aint got change i feel fine with that.

I dont really believe in tipping culture but ive been a waitress and i know how nice it is to have a tiny bit of supplement to a pretty poor wage.

I usually tip 10% for a haircut I'm happy with.

My hairdresser told me she only got the minimum wage and she's very experienced in her 50's I couldn't believe she got so little. She doesn't seem to lead an expensive lifestyle either.

I don't tip the students who wash my hair though and always feel guilty about that but it adds too much to the expense. Some of them are very cackhanded as well.

I have recently decided not to tip anyone. Was it on here that i read it was in America that tipping originated because they don't have minimum wage?
Daughter2 works in a shop to assist her way through University, on minimum wage. Why would i tip a waitress or hairdresser on the same wage when no-one would consider tipping a shop worker?

I wouldn't tip a hairdresser. My mum does, but she says that you shouldn't tip if the "boss" cuts your hair.

I don't like the whole master/servant aspect of tipping.
  • 10% tip has been the accepted custom for many years. It seems to be declining but most people in the industry rely on tips to top up fairly low wages. If you find a good hairdresser she'll be worth every penny and in appreciation will go the 'extra mile' (not charge too much, give extra colour for no extra charge etc.! Consider it an investment. Bad service=no tip.
