Being a nervous driver as reason for picking an auto. is worrying.
Do more, such as Pass Plus or IAM (Institue of Advanced Motorists) lessons to become a more confident driver and then pick whatever gear box suits the type of car you buying, your prevailing driving conditions or what suits your tastes.
It's not just from a safety point of view, it's getting more comfortable so you will enjoy driving more and be more able to navigate via road signs, sat. nav. or route memorised from a paper map to get more value out of the car you will spend a big pile of money on.

There are some cars I would have as an auto. and others I would not, for my mostly open road motoring. If I was doing mostly urban driving I'd probably go auto. for almost any car.

  • I do driver assessments for a living and have often had to recommend that companies change drivers cars from manual to auto as they are safer and simpler to use.

All of these drivers have been men who have insisted they are excellent drivers, but are incapable of selecting the correct gear before they enter a hazard!

Autos aren't necessarily more expensive to run (as there's less likelihood that the driver will abuse them, they are often better on maintenance). Many of the new autos are better on fuel consumption. Second hand autos will often have been run by little old ladies who treat them perfectly (unlike their manual counterparts which have been thrashed to church every sunday in second gear).

An auto allows you to concentrate on the road - inherently safer.

Most of the world uses autos and we're falling slowly into line. Many high end cars actually charge a premium for a MANUAL gearbox now, not the other way around. Hybrid cars need auto boxes so that the battery recharge works efficiently.

The only reason currently to not own an auto is that hiring vans is difficult - this is what understanding friends are for.

Autos can be bought and hired simply.

If in doubt - go auto.

  • You're right - it was intended as humour, but I can see it could be very condescending.

    I apologise.

    Oh...

    That's shut me up....... !!

I have possibly had a sense of humour failure here - and I apologise too! I'm having a beach of a week... sorry.
