Options
Hi my son is going to start uni soon and has been informed that he can get a discount from apple to order a laptop. Does anybody know when this discount starts and has he got to order via a uni computer to get the best discount.

The discount is all year round. Once you have a confirmed place at university then you are able to use it. To access the website though you need to be on a university network. You can still get the discount over the phone though or in an Apple store you will just need to take the AS12 UCAS letter with you or if over the phone they will ask you to scan and email it to them.

Buying over the phone (or online) is probably the best option as you also get a 3 year warranty included that way (they will try and sell one for £58 which they say offers more but if you say no your still entitled to the free one).

You just need to make sure you ask for the Higher Education Discount to ensure you are getting the best discount. This will be the same online, by phone and instore.

Also just another thing to add Apple are rumoured to likely be releasing new Laptop models next month and they are likely to be cheaper than the current models. After the release of a new model is always the best time to buy an Mac.

They also often have a "Back to School" offer where you get a free iPod with the purchase of a Mac if you are a student. Last year this started around Mid-September. So it might be worth holding off getting one for a bit if at all possible.
  • Although you can get a discount from Apple for being a student it still may be cheaper to buy a windows laptop.
In my opinion it's not worth getting an apple if all you are going to do is i
use the internet and type essays. If, however you are likely to do a lot of graphics, video or music work then they are definitely the way to go.
    Student Debt: £8900 and rising.

Owed to the bank: £2200 and falling.

This is very true, I got a laptop late August a few years ago and was very angry when 2 weeks later all the student offers popped up.

Also there will be a release in September of a new macbook, so the old ones may get cheaper.

If you are on a budget, I'd suggest a regular laptop, Macs are a bit OTT for student requirements, a normal laptop will do the job just fine.

Can I just confirm with people ...
If you buy in-store you get a 1 year warranty ...
and if you buy via phone/internet you get a 3 year warranty???

    - am I correct? If so, does anyone know why you can't get the 3 year warranty in store?

It's worth keeping an eye on http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ if you're going to buy an Apple product anytime soon. Most of their computers are due an update but with Apple being so secretive it's difficult to say when and what will be updated.

The current rumour is that there is going to be an event on the 9th of September which we can expect Apple to update some of it's line (if not all). But it's just a rumour at the moment so who knows what will happen (I'm hoping to buy a Macbook soon so I hope they're updated before I go to Uni).

You don't thats the thing with Apple they never announce anything before it happens. I tried phoning them last year and they told me that the offer wasn't going to be running that year then two weeks later the offer started. You just have to wait and see. If there is nothing by the end of september I would say its not happening.

Just to give you some idea this is roughly when it has happened in the past

    2005: Mid August
    2006: Mid August
    2007: Mid Sept
    2008: ?

Gutted, bought one earlier this month, but it was to replace a stolen one so guess i'm better off as this one has a bigger hard drive than my old one. Am waiting to get a new ipod though...
