Samsung 50" Plasma Tv £699

  • the longer you wait the cheaper they get with far better spec lol:rotfl:
  • Is there any hope of still getting this at £700 from John Lewis with their 5 year guarantee?

I was going to get them to price match Comet but the Comet price went up to the old price overnight! Richer sounds has it at £700 but I don't know which stores have it on display :(
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!
  • but its deciding when to leap in as you know the following week it will drop in price again
  • As the owner of an old style bulky tv, I am looking to buy my husband a 42" tv for christmas. What should I be looking for then, I am confused after reading this thread. Thanks
  • To honest I would never buy a TV in the immediate run up to Christmas because the likelyhood is you will get a better deal after christmas.

    Things to consider:
    budget
    viewing distance
what will be connected to it (dvd player, games console etc)
quality of sources be putting throught it (SD (standard definition) freeview TV, SD DVD or HD (high definition) blueray discs, sky HD etc.

There are an awful lot of sweeping statements in this thread and much of the information posted is simply not true and may be incorrectly influencing peoples decisions which is a very bad thing to do.

I would also like to point out that many manufacturers carry out their own independent surveys and guess what? The results rank their products better than there competitors. Panasonic primarily back plasma, they do all they can to push the technology in a diminishing market. The vast majority of new TVs coming to market are LCD. Fact. The technology has moved out so much that LCDs deliver fantastic picture quality out performing all but the high end expensive plasmas and have a MUCH lower running cost. Plasma days are numbered, Pioneer admit this and have recently moved in to the LCD markets having previously been a plasma only company.

The TV in question is also an older entry level model which most similar priced LCDs will easily out perform, so it is only a bargain compared to the original price and for overall screen size, but not so much when compared to the spec (contrast ratio, resolution etc). However, that is not to say it isn't a good TV. Just don't get carried away by people pigeon holing.

Also ask yourself what you want the TV for, as everyone has different needs. The TV will be great for some, but no so good for others who want to use full HD for blu-ray playback etc.

It is worth looking on sites like the http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php if you want accurate information on AV products, in particular TVs

You say that there are a lot of sweeping statements on this thread, then you proceed to make some fairly inaccurate ones of your own. For instance, Pioneer are not moving out of plasmas altogether. They will be using Panasonic plasma screens along with a joint Panasonic / Pioneer engine in their new generation TV's. They are simplt moving out of making the panels.

Also, you say that LCD's are "MUCH" cheaper to run. This is simply not true of the latest generation TV's.

The fact is that there has been a moving together in quality, where the LCD TV's have much better picture quality over even a year ago, and plasmas now have an expected screen life at least equivalent to LCD's,

In the end, it comes down to personal choice. Because I watch a lot of sport, I would choose a plasma. I have an LCD TV that was rated as 5* and appeared in the top 50 rated TV's of a certain magazine, but it still is not right for live sports broadcasts.
  • Hya,

I see some of you have experience/know someone with a Plasma TV 50"... I just wonder if they have it mounted on the wall...? I currently have various things hooked up to my current tv... video, dvd, wii, sky box.. and wonder what will happen with all these leads ? do I need to make a huge hole in the wall to hide them away? or is there a much clever/easier way??

    Thanks for any advice :T

Just came across this thread thinking about treating my old(er!) mum to a new tv. Is there going to be any reply to mandm65's post of a week ago? Looks to me to be a grudging acceptance that plasma is best for live sport but the question remains: if it is wall mounted, just where do all the canles go

hi mate, despite no response in this thread, i went ahead and bought panasonic 46 inch plasma. When i demoed it to a few LCD freaks, they all praised the picture quality, but when i told them they were looking a plasma TV, their jawed just dropped, so very pleased with my choice and the TV PQ. BTW i stayed away from the 'Full HD' hype.
