Options
Hey,
Im looking to buy a small laptop, around 7-9" screen. Ive have been looking on ebuyer and found some for around £300, but the majority of them are with Linux, which i dont fancy as my other operatng systems are Windows.

Does anyone know any cheap sites out there with small latops?

The kind of specs im looking for are:
Windows Xp or Vista
A decent CPU
7-9" screen,
1+ GB ram
Around 20GB HDD if possible

Any suggestions greatly apreciated,
Thanks

  • The EEE PC 900/1 and Acer Aspire One come with Windows XP installed, they're your two main choices.

PCWorld have 'Advent 4211' for £280. This is exactly the same as 'MSI Wind' with a PCWorld sticker on (reviews on web, I think the only difference is lower power battery on Advent). Slightly bigger screen than you want but 1G RAM and 80G HD, WinXP. Has better keyboard than the first eee I played with (nearly full size keyboard). My wife has had one for a month or so, and works great.

Had an initial problem with it, but amazingly PCWorld telephone helpline helped and told me how to fix the problem in a few minutes.

I have an Advent 4211. They're excellent - just the job. They should be on display at your local PC World.

    What problem did you have?
  • This youtube video might be of some help as it compares the MSI Wind (same as PC World's Advent 4211), HP, Asus eee 901 and Acer One. The bootup test towards the end is slightly unfair as they're not using the same OS but it should give you some idea and let you compare them.

I've went for an Acer One as I don't really need a long battery life but need a decent screen, keyboard and the 120Gb, 1Gb and Windows XP should do me nicely for what I need. I have pre-ordered from dabs.com who were the cheapest.

£218.55, actually! But only via PC World Business, as far as I know, not Currys or PC World, etc (hope the links work!).

But PCWB have none in stock!

I set it up first day on battery power so it would run down (cycling/calibrating battery meter? not sure if this needs doing but did it anyway) then plugged it in overnight to charge. Next morning, not charged and wouldn't turn on... Phoned helpline and they told me to take out battery, hold down power button for 10 secs and plug in charger, then replace battery... They said it was something to do with static build up with battery I think. Anyway, it worked and no problems since. Maybe this is a first for pcworld helpline.

can only add to the positive comments for the Advent 4211

I have had one since the day after they were released. I work away a lot and my company issued us with 15" DELL bricks !!

Suffice it to say i bought myself an Advent 4211. An absolute delight to use, I have chunky fingers and am sitting here typing this in my hotel room with no problems at all.

Absolutely perfect for web browsing - document handling etc on the move without being weighed down by a bulky laptop.

My one and only complaint is that the power pack and leads take up almost as much space as the computer itself !! When will someone invent a power pack that is tiny !! After all the laptop is a marvel of miniturisation.... why not spend some time now on the power pack??

Oh actually two complaints - 2 of the USB ports are far too close together. I have a 3G dongle in one and can't get anything else in the other... fortunately the 3rd is on the other side of the unit (ideal for a small Mouse) BUT i cannot get a USB memory stick in as well !! (Only a minor niggle though)

    All the best

They have. The Eee power supply is only 9x4x3 cm. Perfect for travelling. :p

I'll add a vote for the Eee. I'm on my second one. I bought an original Linux 701 when they first came out last year which I loved, but always felt it needed a slightly bigger screen. I took delivery of a Linux 901 two weeks ago and I was right. The bigger screen and longer life battery have taken an already fantastic machine up several levels.

I'm not a Linux geek, but using the Eee has not been a problem in any way whatsoever. If you really want, the Eee comes with XP too, but I wouldn't bother.
