goto to where you store the files and 'right click' and 'create folder' (Call it whatever you like)
Put ALL the files into the folder by either dragging them or cut and paste (Right click)
Once all files are in the folder 'right click' and select 'properties', it will then tell you the overall size :)

Thanks everyone! I think the USB flash stick will probably be the best for me. Do they come in different sizes? I have a massive amount of documents on word that I definitely want to take with me - I do research - so do you think I would need to get more than 1 USB or do they come big enough to store lots of documents?
    Thanks again
Not recommendation but rather to give you an idea of what's on offer.

Hovering your cursor over a file in explorer windo will usually tell you it's size. Hovering your cursor over a folder will usually give you the total size of the contents, unless it's a system created folder such as My Documents, in which case right click and select "properties", the size will be displayed under the"General" tab
Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Hi - you really are the most fabulous group of people and so generous with your knowledge! I feel so much better informed now.

One last question (I think) if you wouldn't mind. Can you tell how many Migabytes are in 1 gigabyte? I think I'll be able to do what I need to once I know that.

Thank you all so much - I really appreciate your help.
    Warmest regards!

Bit of a loaded question. (I think you meant Megabytes). Well there are either 1000 megabytes in a gigabyte or a 1024 depending on who you ask. Hard disk manufacturers tend to use it to mean 1000. But strictly speaking everyone should be use Mebibytes and Gibibytes where a gibibyte always means a 1024 mebibytes. But for rule of thumb purposes use the everyday normal meanings of the prefixes. (i.e. kilo means 1000, mega means 1,000,000, giga means 1,000,000,000 etc).
