Hi all - I am an absolute novice when it comes to anything techie - I've just been reading this thread and I'm going round in circles.
I will be moving soon and don't want to take my computer with me (it's getting really old and I've decided to buy a new one in my new location).
What I'm looking for is "something" to transport my word documents and some emails so that when I get my new computer I just copy them on to that.
Can anyone, in the simplest terms, please tell me the best way to go about this. I have a disk and CD drive on my old computer if that helps.
Many thanks & warm regards0 -

If it is a cd writer you could just copy all your personal files to cd. Could also remove the hard drive and take that with you.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Hi - thanks for your response. I know it's only a CD reader and I would not have a clue how to remove the hard drive or what to do with it if I did.
Sorry to sound pathetic!0 -
Simplest thing is a USB flash stick then
They all look similar to this ~

Depends on what info is on the PC but if you you are not planning on keeping it make sure you wipe the harddrive, not simply delete stuff.
Of course you could take it with you and keep it as a backup. Its simple provided you have a few spare minutes and a couple of screw drivers.0 -

Actually. Depending on how many files your talking about and the size of them. You could email them to yourself! Set up a 'googlemail' account and either send via email or save as a 'draft' which can be later picked up by the new computer (Information is stored ONLINE). The files would have to be under 20 megabytes each for it to work though (Id assume theyll be well under that though)
Wont cost a penny:idea:0 -
Thanks everyone! I think the USB flash stick will probably be the best for me. Do they come in different sizes? I have a massive amount of documents on word that I definitely want to take with me - I do research - so do you think I would need to get more than 1 USB or do they come big enough to store lots of documents?
Thanks again0 -
Without getting into stupid money you should be able to pick up an 8 gigabyte one fairly cheap (I paid about 16 quid for mine off ebay). Whats the overall size of the files?:idea:0

Hi aliEnRIK - haven't a clue what size the files are! Could you possibly tell me how to check?
Thanks!0
