Need a new desktop with XP

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I originally bought the ME m/c as I was advised that the XP drivers for my Pinnacle analogue video board were unstable. Needed video editing, pity about the computer. The desktop now sits alongside my XP laptop which I use for most things. I've just got an EasyCAP usb video capture dongle which works well with Ulead software on my laptop but needs more muscle.
I'd thought about a new motherboard, dual or quad processor (OK XP doesn't have the greatest multi-threading reputation so don't shoot me), 2x2GB fast ddr, couple of fast, buffered sata drives with XP oem. I guess that lot would set me back around £300. It would also give me enough power to consider a move to Vista later. However, a new system would save hassle and allow me to install a Linux distro on my existing kit for little extra cost.
Apple appears to be a much better solution for video work but I've too much investment in other Windows based software/data.
By the way Connor and anewhope, I used to lead a software team developing real-time, multitasking, mission-critical operating systems so could write pages to support my 'tongue in cheek' remark about Microsoft's design and implementation competence.Nice to save.0 -

Then it puzzles me why some one with such a high level of software knowledge would lower themselves down to the level of the mindless, uneducated rubbish recyclers that spew out variatons of 'Microsoft' with some kind of 'humourous' change in it..0 -

Have to agree, it's the kind of thing teen l33t speakers do. Not professional adults."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Boy have I touched a raw nerve. I thought this forum was for giving assistance rather than generating personal attacks against me because some posters disagree with just half of one of the 300 words I've posted in the thread.
I'm still interested if anyone has useful advice about the best solution for helping me solve my upgrade problem.
Thanks in advance for any helpful information.Nice to save.0 -
Personally, I'd go for a Quadcore CPU with 4GB but with a 64Bit operating system and match that up with a couple of Samsung Spinpoint 1TB drives.
What is the recomended set up for your video editing program that you use, that's always a good place to start..0
