Need a new desktop with XP

Options
My old desktop machine (Win ME) is getting too long in the tooth and I need to replace it. I'd like one with XP rather than Microstuffed Vista but the usual supplier suspects all seem to only supply Vista.

I'm looking for a system to do some video editting so will need good fsb speed and fast drives. I'm planning to bring one of my old IDE drives into the new machine to save lots of file transfers. So the system needs around 4 spare 3.5in bays.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
Nice to save.

  • build you own pc? buy one off the shelf, and install xp yourself? go to a decent computer shop (not pcworld etc) and tell them what you want? accept that vista is here to stay.
you may (will) also need an ide controller card, as modern motherboards don't support more than 2 ide devices.
going from a machine built in the winme era, to one nowadays is going to be a bit of a shock

  • You could buy a barebones PC from Novatech (comes with power supply, motherboard, processor, and RAM) here. You can then purchase an OEM version of XP at ebuyer for around £50.

Novatech still sell computers with XP (Home) installed, you don't necessarily have to buy a barebones and install XP yourself.

As for the "usual supplier suspects all seem to only supply Vista". I don't know which ones you mean but have you actually enquired with any of them. They my still offer XP even if they don't give it as an option in their literature and on their websites.

  • Ooops, Davetrousers is right! Didn't even think of the most obvious solution...
  • What's your budget?

What software will you be using for your editing?

scan.co.uk and dabs.co.uk both have OEM XP available if your building your own, they'd be the two main suppliers I'd use (although I am having an arguement with dabs right now). RAM would be VAT free from 7dayshop.com :)
At least when you build it yourself you know whats gone in and will get one thats to the spec you need.

So why are you calling it "Microstuffed Vista"? Is it because you're a sheep and incapable of thinking for yourself?

Considering you've been using ME which is universally acknowledged as the worst OS of all time, I find it quite funny that you slate Vista.

    Have you even tried Vista?

Couldn't have put it better myself..
  • These people still supply XP loaded p.cs. http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/
Ignore the XP/Vista argument. Get what YOU want and prefer.
However, I've had a laptop and desktop preloaded with Vista Premium and upgraded both to XP Professional :D
