    do you work for coop?

Halifax, Lloyds and barclays all offer their own basic accounts as well with visa electron as far as I can see from their websites.

All the banks named (bar BoS/Halifax) have replaced Visa Electron with Visa Debit.
Co-op, BoS/Halifax, and in some instances, Abbey will issue Visa Electron cards.

The only way to get a Visa Electron from Barclays is to buy a gift card for £3.

UK Visa Electron cards usually start 4917 or 4508 if that helps.

Chuckley and Heng Leng and all the others who replied THANKS, I applied over the phone today for a Visa Electron with CO-OP.

Now as for Barclays they must be desperate for custom, they told me in the bank YES you will get an electron but it wont say it on it.

Afetr a 30minute call to customer services they tried to UPGRADE MY account i said i just wanted a ELECTRON, They then told me Mr Black that is what you have, so i gave up and agreed. Funny how it doesnt say that on the card it says: VISA DEBIT AND CONNECT
Also starts with 4658 and has raised numbers.
Im so cancelling the Barclays account on Tuesday and even emailed them to say so.
    Talk about "Missleading Representation".

The reason why they probably call it an "electron" is because it does have the same functionality embedded as the (old) electron; in that all transactions are forced by the software on the card to be authorised online so (in theory) you can't get overdrawn on it.

They probably refer to it as the "electron" for familiarity. The Barclays "Visa Electron" doesn't exist anymore as far as I am aware.

Certainly, I have seen that Barclays do 3 types of Connect debit card; an "electron" with no cheque guarantee, one with a £50 cheque guarantee and another with a £100 cheque guarantee. They are all Visa Debit, but have varying degrees of cheque guarantee, and for the upper levels, it is up to the software on the card and/merchant or bank to decide whether to authorise a transaction online or offline.
  • http://www.barclaycardbusiness.co.uk/docs/binranges.pdf has a definitive list of which prefixes are considered to be UK Visa Debit, UK Visa Electron, or other Visa. The 6 digit prefix is the only thing to go by, regardless of what it says on the card or other publicity.

Or just get a cash card account with the Halifax... that is what i have.

Yea out of the Barclays electron card and Halifax basic electron i would opt for the Halifax, basically the electron with Barclays requires you to have a normal current account but the card you can get with it will either be a normal debit or an electron, so first of all you have to apply for a normal current account which requires a credit check so its a useless card on a current account, but the basic cash card with Halifax is easily obtainable without worrying if you will pass the credit checks, if you are declined then you have serious problems because its not a credit account, the Halifax electron can be kept aside and used only when you need it like for the airline tickets

by the way i work for barclays not halifax but i do have a normal account with both banks and the cash card account with Halifax, it works well

Barclays no longer issue a Visa Electron card on any of their current accounts. They have replaced it with a Visa Debit, so there would be no benefit for Ryanair by opening an account with them.

Here is a link to the application for the EasyCash with Visa Electron

I used to have an Electron card with Barclays, but they "upgraded" me to a Visa Debit last year. They must make a higher commision out of the merchants or something.

The Halifax easycash account was a doddle to open (although they accidentally opened two for me, but promptly fixed it). I received my Visa electron card about 4 days after signing up online, which was very impressive. It has saved me about £32 in this month alone :)

Thanks to everyone for the advice - it is great taking advantage of the £1 and £10 fares without getting stung on stupid card fees.
