Sounds like van people wish to avoid insurance...

But if you cannot pay their damages nor your excess. You could be a tad screwed.

£500 excess is alot - are you sure that is what is on your insurance?

If you let it go to insurance the claim will go against you as you went into the back of someone. You will be assumed to have caused the accident as you should be keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front and be ready to stop.

The van firm not wanting to do anything with insurance is a good thing for you. You phoning your insurance company might not do you any favours though. Probably best to shop around for the cheapest quote to get the repairs done, if not to showroom standard to MOT standard.

Personally I would inform your insurance company about the incident if your not claiming tell them that and tell them the 3rd party are not claiming. You are sorting the repairs yourself. This shouldn't make a difference to your premium as there has been no claim but I have a mate who did the same as you, both agreed no insurance, my mate paid the guy for his repair bill and got his car fixed and paid. When he renewed the insurance company informed him of no no claims discount as he had had the incident. The 3rd party had made a claim against him so lost the NCD they wern't happy as he hadn't informed them of the accident in the first place. I beleive if you read your insurance policy terms and conditions it will tell you to inform them of any accident claim or no claim.

Result the guy ripped my mate off, my mate lost his NCD and had paid for his repairs.

So I now inform them of anything that happens, even when some guy scrapped my car caused no damage just a scuff that I polished out
  • hi again it says on the policy that my voluntary excess is 200 and there compulrary is 500 which is a bit of a pee take i think as when i took out the policy i put in for a no volunary excess so dont know how they worked that one out!
i really dont think i could afford do get it done privately as buying the bits seperately probs add up to the excess then i would have to get someone to fit and really it all as its really mashed up
i can understand why the van driver dont want to put it through on his as it was just a bent bar on the back off the scaffolding van which may have been bent anyhow but doubt it was, it just need putting back into shape though which he said he could do easily enough, oddly though the driver has no name:rotfl:
i am dreading the ins company as im sure they will wheedle out of it somehow anyway as thats how they work isnt it:confused:

When you took out the insurance you would have signed to indicate your agreement to the terms (including the excess). If you signed something without reading it the fault is yours.

For a 60 year old driving a Vauxhall Agila - Yes.

For a 20 year old driving an Evo X - No.

OP doesn't tell us what the car is or her age.

I'm always astonished at people who accept insurance terms at inception and then moan about them when they need to claim.

Either way, if you hit someone up the rear end, you gotta pay.. :D

OP, its not good to tailgate......... :o

I try and avoid this woman each day (not the Op - well don't think so), but I don't always succeed, but she is the driver from hell. Sits on my bumper, or, if she is ahead of me, I kinda get distracted and fixated as she sits on someone else's bumper.

I don't know know how people can drive like that.

I used to have a sign on the back of my old car that said "the closer you get, the slower I drive":rotfl: Hubby hated me having it, he reckoned it invited people to do it just to aggravate me:mad:

Need to get a new one that says "my brakes are fantastic, are yours?"

I don't get tailgated much in my new car, the smaller your car the more likely you are to get tailgated.

Good job I'm not a 'bloke' - I would be really upset :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

30 years ago I had a Triumph 1300 with aftermarket reversing lights operated from a dashboard switch. Usually good for a laugh when being tailgated.

Now I change down a couple of gears and lift my foot of the throttle.
