The OP hasn't said if they have Comp or TPF&T Insurance ( unless I have missed it ) it could make a significant difference.

I don't know know how people can drive like that.

its easy,8 years of tailgating and only once have i rear ended someone. you just need to practice it.

Do NOT go through your insurance, you wil be the one to lose, no one else! If you give some more details on your car etc, it might not actually be that expensve to fix. Ie, could you drive the car away? Many years ago when I was a c**ky new driver I thought I could tailgate but ended up hitting a rover up the a**e, my fiesta took it quite bad and it crumpled the wings, bumber and the radiator was knackered. But my dad knocked out all the crinkles and straigthened it up, got a new radiator and it was road worthy again! Although I didnt pay labour I know it wouldnt have cost nowhere near the £700 you might be likely to pay on your excess.
If the van doesnt want to claim on your insurance, leave it at that! If he claims on your insurance you'll then lose your no claims, cos it was your fault(no matter how hard he braked in front of you, you should leave a big enough stopping distance!)

Now I change down a couple of gears and lift my foot of the throttle.

Which IMHO is just as bad. What if this action causes an accident and an innocent party gets injured (passenger in your or other car, or another car or pedestrian).

    Cheers, Nick.

I used to have a sign on the back of my old car that said "the closer you get, the slower I drive":rotfl: Hubby hated me having it, he reckoned it invited people to do it just to aggravate me:mad:

Need to get a new one that says "my brakes are fantastic, are yours?"

I don't get tailgated much in my new car, the smaller your car the more likely you are to get tailgated.
Tailgating is a real problem here, most Turkish Drivers dont take a test, they are simply given their licence so have no concept of breaking distances etc and quite happily tailgate going across the mountains, so when approaching a very steep hill and they try and build speed up, I slow down, they tend to get the message after a while....

It's usually a condition of your insurance that you inform them of any accidents, whether you claim or not.

Also there are quite a few scam artists around who deliberately try to get you to run into the back of them and don't want to go through insurance. They then get the cash off you for the repairs and also claim from your insurance for not only vehicle damages but personal injuries.

its a cyhsrler grand voyager , im 35 , been driving 10 years and never had an accident before , had a mondeo just before this thing and had nowt but trouble since i got it so beleve its cursed lol
the excess is expensive but i put down for none voluntary and all of them kept putting a 500 pound compulsray excess so i didnt have much choice:confused:
i phoned up again today and they said i need to get the garage to send them a quote though but they are shut till tuesday but dont really want to go back in it again now.
unfortunatly it was so sudden that couldnt really be avoided, thankfully was going slow and not on a motor way so not as bad as it could have been.
the other driver that slammed on his brakes just drove off so cant even get no claim off that person and the van driver didnt indicate just bloomin decided to pull to a stop which wouldnt have been a problem if i never had to go that lane to avoid the other car.
we were quite far behind too but obviously not far enough.

So the other driver was Turkish then? I didn't realise that, but am not sure that will make a difference in the claim if she hit him up the rear.
