Funeral payments

  • Bargainhunter... thanks for those links. Tomorrow I'll ring our nephew, (the one who i.d my bro-in-laws body), and ask him to find out if the hospital have registered the death, as this might have been already done as you say. If my sis is able to bring the cost of the funeral down to the bare minimum, then she will arrange the funeral on behalf of their son, as long as there is no shortfall to be paid, then she doesn't mind doing it, she just wishes she could have afforded to do it at the beginning, and this would have caused us less pain.

Thanks again for all your kind words of support and advice. Will let you know how things go on Tuesday, as I forgot tomorrow is a bank holiday, and nothing can be done.

Have a nice day tomorrow everyone and thanks for taking the time to reply.

The deceased does not have any money to bury himself, which is a lesson to us all to make sure we save for our funeral.
Was he truly penniless? Anyone who contributes to the funeral costs is first in line when it comes to getting their money back. The following question and answer are from the Legal Services Commission’s advice website.
    13. What if there isn't enough money to pay the person's debts?

If there is not enough money to pay all the debts, they must be paid in a particular order:

    1. the funeral expenses and ‘testamentary’ expenses (those to do with dealing with the will);

If your sister’s partner died with any money or possessions that can be sold to make up the £2000, you can use the lot for the funeral. You can do this even if he also died with a huge overdraft and credit card debts, and so owed more than he was worth.

  • Hi

Just an update. I rang the home, (they didn't call me back), and they told me that they will not help, and the people who fund the decd, mother, will not help either. The nurse was apologetic and understanding none the less.

I told my nephew who then visited the hospital where (my sis, ex is) and they said that they have registered the death and the hospital social work dept will help to bury him as his nok is under age.

Finally we will be able to bury my sisters ex and say our goodbyes.

Thank you to all who offered advice and kind words.

    Regards
  • Another update

The funeral is now arranged for next week and everything is sorted.

    Thankyou

That's great news sailormoon. I'm so pleased that his children can finally get to say goodbye. By the way, the support that you have shown your sister through this is truely wonderful....what a great brother you are.

Let us know how things go.

I'm so glad to see the conclusion of this thread. I was aghast at how you have had to fight every inch to get someone the very basic dignity of being buried by their family. It sounds as though there is a gaping hole in the advice services in the area your sister lives (or maybe it applies everywhere) that this hould have been so very difficult.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
