This is one of those posts where we all get hooked up on a play of words, we all know the law in this case, so enough.
But for the reassurance of the OP or others in similar circumstances, not having an MOT when you should have, (to keep everyonehappy;) ), is, provided the car is entirely road worthy, one of the less serious motoring offences, IMHO of course:rolleyes:
Flak jacket at the ready;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

You have an MOT = legal
You don't have an MOT = legal .............. how come??
If that is the case then why do we bother to get one done?
No MOT = not legal - in my book, but someone will know better.
If you don't have an MOT and are still legal (apart from driving to test centre) doesn't that make a whole farce of it all??
Car under 3 years old... :rotfl:0 -
It is a legal requirement for a car over 3 years old to have an MOT with exceptions for driving to a pre-booked test or to get repairs done to enable it to pass an MOT.
Not having an MOT does not invalidate your insurance.
What's complicated?
The legal side of things and the insurance side of things are completely seperate. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

And exempt vehicles which are vehicles used on certain islands or areas of land mostly surrounded by water being an island or area from which vehicles cannot be conveniently driven to any other part of the UK. This does not mean they cannot be driven onto the mainland just that it should not be convenient to do so. And this covers -for cars (certain goods vehicles are excluded from some of the following) - All islands and isles (with inconvenient access to other parts of the UK) except the following the Isle of Wight, the islands of Arran, Bute, Great Cumbrae, Islay, Lewis, Mainland (Orkney), Mainland (Shetland), Mull, North Uist and Skye.
EDIT to add: The exclusion list above refers to those islands and isles that would not be obviously excluded by the presence of a bridge or good road to other parts of the UK. The list was written around 1981, hence why they included Skye in the list - it now has a bridge and so would be withdrawn from the exclusion list - because it is obvious the vehicles can conveniently travel to the other parts of the UK.
What I'd like to know is which "areas of land mostly surrounded by water" are included..... Knoydart perhaps?0 -
Does that mean cars on the Isle of Dogs and Isle of Sheppey don't need an MOT? What about Northern Ireland?
Police cars are also exempt for some reason, which means that cars which can legally drive at 150mph plus aren't required to be checked for roadworthiness.I've given up trying to get my signature to work with the new rules, if nobody knows what the rules are what hope do we have?0 -

Indeed, I recall buying an ex-undercover police car from the auctions, took it straight to an MOT station, it failed miserably, it was obviously in service in that state.

Not the Isle of Dogs because that is connected to the mainland by roads and is also no longer an isle or island. NI is presumably required by specific legislation to require MOT . Isle of Sheppey is linked by a road. I edited my post above.0

I "think" this is a general forum?, for normal people?, so can you/we stop thinking up super extraneous situations where an MOT is not neccessary?
For the average JoeBloggs, it is:T
Edited to ask;
Or is this going to be another of those obtuse "i'm smarter/know more than you threads"?I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I think you are reading far too much into what I see as normal thread chat.cyclonebri1 wrote: »I "think" this is a general forum?, for normal people?, so can you/we stop thinking up super extraneous situations where an MOT is not neccessary?
