Yes this is especially annoying for those of us that have friends/family abroad so we cannot just ignore the calls that show up as "International". Even more so because I'm sure the technology exists for BT to show the caller's number for international calls (at least from some countries) but for some reason they won't do it.

It is BT's policy never to pass an international CLI - supposedly because they don't know whether the caller wanted to withhold their number or not.

However, my experience is that, when using BT's Call Diversion calling feature to divert incoming calls to my moble, full international CLIs are displayed. In other words, they're there but BT are wimps.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi,
I've read most of the messages here and it is disappointing to see that there does not seem to be an effective answer to this problem. Last year I splashed out on a "Truecall" device to help. It is quite effective but there are a few snags. The most annoying thing is that International calls have to be accepted or rejected by menu selection. We have a daughter in France who phones every week so we have to accept ALL international calls which leaves the door open for those nuisance calls. Apparently the telephone number is "stripped out" and overseas numbers are not shown, including our daughter's, so we cannot select those to accept/reject etc.
I am registered with the TPS which seems to have stopped some calls but it is the international ones that are a real nuisance. I am going to try call screening with the answer machine and see if that will encourage PPI sales to hang up.
If anyone finds the solution, please post as it is driving me mad.

  • Chiming in here, I'm getting 2 of these international calls per day now and they're getting later & later in the evenings.

I have stopped answering them, there's no point, as soon as I pick up, the line goes dead. Also I found if I answered, they would call again. Now I ignore it, but this week it has increased to 2 calls per day. So annoying!!

I too have a Truecall and find it fantastic! There is a newer option that allows you block International calls with a Caller code. Under My Options in the Internet Control Panel, Advanced Call Screening you need to set a Callers Code and set the Reject Caller Treatment to "Ask for Caller code". Just give this code to your daughter so she can get through and others can't! Works well with my family in France.

You need to set this up from the Truecall web site which is accessible for a fee after your first year of registration. You may also need to update your software for a fee too!
    Nice to save.

Tuecall sounds ideal. Where can you get this?

    Truecall.co.uk or amazon.co.uk

It really works I hardly get any cold calls but those that do are 100% blocked

With Truecall, you can block the international calls, but give your daughter (and anyone else abroad who might legitimately want to phone) a code that will bypass the block and get straight through to you.

I've recently acquired Truecall, and it is is very good. In order to get the best out of it, you need to configure it to suit your needs.

Can't understand why no-one else has made a "Truecall" type device, but more cheaply to appeal to the mass market - the problem with foreign call centres seems ,in my experience, to be getting worse and worse. I had 8 calls yesterday with 1471 giving "we do not have the callers number" - I also answered one - and yes, it was Jean from Mumbai!!!!

I don't understand why an enterprising DECT phone manufacturer hasn't built the functionality into the phone itself (or base unit I guess). You'd then have a screen and keyboard with which to configure the thing.
