Daughter has just graduated as a nurse and has to move city's because of new job. Are there any tips or things she should be checking or be aware of before taking on a property?
I can imagine its a bit of a mindfield and probably more so because of the way the housing and mortages are effecting people at the moment. The rents seem to be very high  I was shocked and really concerned, its so hard to start out after uni with all this expense, student loans and just about no prospect of ever being able to afford a house of thier own, as how can they save! She was hoping there might be hospital accomodation but they allocate those to Doctors only.
Shes idealy looking at something in a reasonable area in Sheffield 2 bedrooms if possible but 1 will do.

Will she be able to afford it on her nurse's salary?
What are the rental prices in Sheffield like?
I'm moving out soon (hopefully) with the g/f who qualified as a nurse last year and 2-bedroom flats around here are £750-£800+.... I'll be working full time as of September (not a bad salary either) and we're still going to struggle, especially if we want to save too!
Good luck to her though, I know how she feels.

She is moving in with her boyfriend too who has a full time job although not a great paying one. She has been looking at houses and it seems they start at for unfurnished around £600 min for city center and £500 or so just out of it, she doesnt want to stay in the center anyway and she doesnt want to be right next to the hospital either. There were some slightly cheaper ones but apparently in really bad areas and was advised to avoid those areasThanx

Try looking on Sheffield Forum or here http://sheffield.vivastreet.co.uk/rent-flats-property-house+sheffield0

Try having a look on www.sheffieldforum.co.uk there is a very active 'property to let' section there with private landlords posting vacancies regularly0

Just left Sheffield (after 3 years down there) to return home to Newcastle.
The place is awash with quality and cheap rentals. Haggle hard on the rent, 10-15% off is will within reach unless she wants to live in some of the 'posher' areas. We rented a 2 bed new build flat for £450 a month and were about to move to a 4 bedroom cottage (about 15 miles north of sheffield) for £550 a month. But.... job move forces us back to the toon :>
In terms of agents, avoid Blunders (or was that Bundells :>) like the plague. Everyone in Sheffield knows they are ****.
Also if she needs some help on areas, give me a msg in the thread of pm me. I'll be happy to help. Roughly where in Sheffield will she be working?0 -
Are nurse residences out of the question?
Can she drive or would she want to be on bus / tram route?
Which hospital will she be working in?0 -

She asked in the interview and thats when they told her they are all taken by Doctors but I did say to her it wont do any harm to ask again if any become vacant. Apparently the hospital staff residence is much cheaper it would have been much easier on her for first starting out to do that.
She drives, I think nursing is difficult if you cant due to the shifts so being near the tram isnt that important.
How long are usual renting contracts for private accom? its just if any hospital ones became available she may want to move and if shes stuck in a 12 month contract/agreement it will mess that upThanx

Its the Northern General Hospital, the area directly around it isn't nice apparently which is why she doesnt want to live too close although if she had been given hospital accom she would have taken that as it wouldnt have been the same as renting a house near the hospital.
Shes moving from Nottingham so I suppose it would be helpfull if it was nearer this way rather than further out too because she will still be visiting and staying over occasionally. I think she said she wants an absolute maximum 30 minute drive from the hospital but preferably less as when youve been on a long shift its not good to drive too far back plus you have to allow for busy traffic on the way to and from a hospital
Oh yes she knows about bundells they have a bad reputationThanx
