If anyone's stupid enough to type their pin+number from the fob into a screen asking for your example up above then more fool them!

Many people would say the same thing about entering your banking details into a screen which has come from an email with bad spelling on a website that is clearly not your banks ...

Yet people still do ... and this is what the banking industry is trying to protect against.

I'm not against it, I just don't wish to carry the card and reader around with me when in work, over my mate's, overseas etc. I only want to check my balance! A simple password and number used to do the trick!

how sad...why do you need to check your balance when visiting your friends...get a life....

How did you do that? I was compelled to use teh new system otherwise I couldn't send money

Yea as i mentioned earlier in my post i am restricted in what i can do online, you can revert back to the old method, but if you want to send money to another bank or somebody else then you will have to use the pinsentry machine, what i do is i use online to view money and do transfers between my own barclays accounts and use telephone banking to transfer money to other people, ask barclays for the international number to customer services, it begins with 02476 or int 00442476, its a coventry number, its quicker to get through on nd costs alot less :T if you want to know more just mail me

im a bit at a loss to understand why some of you are so against it. you put your card in, plug in your pin and it gives you an authorisation code which you put online. whats the problem with that:confused: extra minute at the most.

doubt there will be many places to go to soon who dont use the system - if it helps with fraud then the banks are going to use it.

Nelski, you have to use the Nationwide Card Reader to pay standing orders. How is that helping with fraud? If someone cloaned my card or hacked into my account, they are not going to want to PAY my bills are they? I can see where Gareth83 is coming from - you now have carry the reader around with you EVERYTIME you want to do an online transaction whether you are at home, work, abroad...

Also, Nationwide have so far failed to answer my complaint to them that if you have a FlexAccount with a Cash Card, you can pay standing orders as before WITHOUT the use of a reader so what is the justification in people with Debit Cards having to use it? At no point when paying bills do you enter your debit card no. or pin no.

I have standing orders set up from one of my current accounts to another. When I set a new one up online I get no paper copy sent to me through the post or any email to confirm it. If someone gets into your online account there's nothing to stop them setting up a standing order to themselves for as much as your bank will allow to be paid and you'd know nothing about it until it had gone.

Personally if my account is being accessed from a computer outside of my home I want every possible security measure in place. If I'm a work and I want to pay a bill/buy something I'll do it through the company in questions website. If all I'm doing is moving money around/setting up a standing order it can wait until that night when I get home. If it's a computer abroad I sure as hell don't want to be able to transfer money without having extra security in place.
  • I recently received a card reader to use with my Natwest account.

Apart from having to use it when I set up a new payment/Direct Debit/Standing Order or changing Passwords I have never been asked to use it. It seems to me that I only need it to set things up or when I change certain details. Never been asked for it when viewing balances or checking payments etc.

Once payments etc are set up then it's business as usual... enter who to pay and how much and it's done, no reader asked for.

I have seen it mentioned that if you move largish amounts of money about then you may be asked to use the reader but that doesn't apply to me ( unfortunately ! ).

So, from my point of view, it's not a problem to use and I haven't had to carry it around with me. Maybe I don't do some of the things that generate the need to use the reader very often but I do everything that I need/want to do or am I just lucky ?

Other banks may be different though

I have now received card readers for both Barclays and Natwest, great I thought.

Till I learned you have to use this just to even check your balance. the idea of internet banking I thought is to make payments etc anywhere in the world. So in order to do so I need to have the following:

    Card
    Card Reader
    Password
    membership number

    How annoying is that!!!!

Probably not as annoying as discovering you've fell victim to fraud and have no money in your account..

How does that comment help? Technology is meant to make things easier and it is a joke that instead or improving and advancing online banking, we are being sent lumps of black plastic card readers from just about every bank we use.
The way its going you won't be able to use online banking unless you call into the bank first everytime!

It's my opinion on a comment, this is a discussion board?

What's so difficult about taking five seconds to generate a code to move money out of your account? I'm all for measures that protect my hard earned money.

I have some gadget that natwest sent me, I've used it once when i set up a standing order, i can check my balances, cancel dd's and its not asked for.

If it stops my money going walkies then I'm all for it
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?
