Should I take it back or chat to them over the phone first?

Personally I would take it back if you can carry it

Of course, I'd be taking it back myself but shouldn't I notify them over the phone first that I am bringing the TV in for a refund because I am not happy with it?

Just as a heads up for future reference - we bought a Sony Bravia LCD TV from Currys for £799. A week later we had a quick peek in the Sony Centre - same TV was being sold for £999.

It amuses me that you were so offended by the concept of not knowing everything that you scurried off to try and find some proof!

So what? Because the first thing you then did was exactly the same thing!

I found a site that shows that it's a general characteristic of LCD TV's to not have a good picture when viewing from an angle of more than 45 degrees. If they all do this then it's a characteristic, a general characteristic of an entire product range across different brands does not then mean 'not fit for purpose'.

I'm not surprised you can't see the picture from a 90 degree angle!

To be honest an argument like that won't get you anywhere.

but it did, he got his money back

They usually are more expensive than anywhere else but the 40" TV was on offer with free bluray player and 5yr warranty for £699 whereas most places are doing it for £699 or £799 for just the TV.

BTW, I paid for the TV in cash, does that mean they will refund me via a cash payment?

Nonsense, I just very quickly found an example of something I already knew. You went off to research it to try and prove me wrong!

Sigh. I'll repeat again. It is not a characteristic of all LCDs that they are unwatchable (not just a slight degredation) from any viewing angle beyond (ok, let's talk in your units of measure), 45 degrees to either side of the TV. Next time you're in a high street electronics store take a look at the better TVs from a narrow angle from the side (yes, even more than 45 degrees) and you'll see they're absolutely fine.

Anyhow, I don't need to convince 'never knowingly agreed a shop was wrong about anything' Tim on MSE - I convinced Currys that a TV should reasonably be viewable from reasonable angles as set up in a typical room.

Ok, apart from the image problems I was having I have noticed a 3cm long scratch on the bezel. Its not deep, its a fine line but its there as I thought it might be dirt or remenants of sticky tape or something but it wouldn't clean off.
