Are you unhappy with the TV's native picture or are you watching it through Sky or a Freeview set top box, both of which compress their signals which can cause degradation of the picture.

I successfully (well they might just have wanted me out the store! :p) got a full refund from Currys by saying that a 15" LCD was not fit for purpose (clearly stated I was not claiming it was faulty) because you could only watch it from about a 90 degree angle (avoid Hitachi screens BTW) before the picture just washed out. To me a TV should be viewable around a room with people sitting in typical positions.

I was blagging it a little bit, but you could try that angle - a TV should be viewable without giving you a headache. I'd imagine it is something to do with the settings or source though.

I'm not surprised you can't see the picture from a 90 degree angle!

To be honest an argument like that won't get you anywhere.

LCDs viewing angle is measured over 180 degrees. So you couldn't watch it anywhere beyond 45 degrees either side of directly central. Good quality TVs typically have 178 degree viewing angle.

See, you don't know everything after all Tim :p

So you'd find it acceptable if a TV gave you a headache, even though it 'worked'.

Are you sure you've got your angles right. At 90 degrees you would be looking side on at any TV.

I would love to see a TV which gave a perfect view at 89 degrees! Can you provide a link from a site that confirms this, I personally don't believe you can look at a TV 1 degree off side on and see the picture properly.

    Wrong!!!!

    "Fact
However, LCD pixels merely ‘pass on’ a light originating from a single point behind them, therefore LCD screens can lose contrast and colour if watched from angles as small as 45 degrees."

Of course it'll degrade, but it should still be watchable - that link is simply comparing plasma to LCDs. I don't think LCDs would've taken off if they were all only watchable over a 90 degree arc! This TV was so bad you were just looking at a black screen if you moved around the room. If you ever used a laptop c.2001 then you'd know what I mean.

Walk into any high street store and you'll see the viewing angle listed, e.g. 176 degrees - i.e. 88 degrees either side of being directly in front of the screen:

It amuses me that you were so offended by the concept of not knowing everything that you scurried off to try and find some proof!

Ok, maybe saying it isn't faulty is wrong. I'm not technically knowledged about LCDs to say whether my set is faulty or not but I "assume" it isn't but it could be.

The most evident blurring and smearing is on my Xbox 360 connected via HDMI. I have tried many games and they blur/smear so much that much of the detail of the picture is lost.

A friend of mine has an older model Sony LCD and it doesn't blur/smear like this, nor does it make me nauseous.

So am I under the impression that I can only return the TV for a full refund if it is faulty?

Well the Sales Of Goods Act does say it should be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, which in your case it would seem not to be.

As you have only had it 3 days I would say that's a reasonable time in which to ask for a full refund

Until you take it back to the supplier you really wont know what their attitude will be. You really need to take it back to the supplier in the first instance.

Should I take it back or chat to them over the phone first?
