in Techie Stuff
I had problems with my pc last week and while it was being repaired I was using my daughter's fujitsu laptop (very similar spec to this one).
The pc is now sorted but I've decided that I'd like to get a laptop. Because I liked the 'feel' of the fujitsu I've been looking at those. The Li 2735 is my favourite so far although this acer aspire looks good too. Or should I save my cash and go for something more basic as I only need it for internet, email and photgraphs etc, I don't do much downloading.
Although I've been reading up on laptops I'm a techie numpty and would really appreciate any opinions on these laptops and/or suggestions if there is something out there that would be better, cheaper or more suitable for a basic user.
Thanks for any help,
Pink

that fujitsu has been discussed in the sticky thread... Spec wise it seems very good, but please do some research before buying. Try and find reviews online and stuff... so many bargain laptops seem to have some kind of hardware fault with them...
Between the two, the fujitsu one is the better one spec wise... Both will be adequate for a very long time if you are just using it for general home use.
However, I think people (like myself included) focus too much on the specs and not how good the laptop actually functions. Thise laptops are cheap, but also over specced for basic daily chores, it is possible to buy cheaper laptops if you wished, but i think we all wanna buy something a little special right?0 -
You'll find the anti acer and anti fujitsu folk in soon saying they are both rubbish so I'll post my comments now as I've had both, Acer was simpler to upgrade memory and from a girly point of view I'd go with that one being silver0

It really depends on whether or not you have the independence of mind to not be a sheep and follow convention but instead make your own decision about what you want and buy something better.
You describe yourself as a basic user and a "techie numpty". Well, take a look at the front page of this sub-forum and you will see for yourself that it is full of people posting problems with a PC. How often do you ever see anybody posting a problem with a Mac?
Malware problems with a Mac are virtually unknown. Malware is almost entirely directed at PC owners.
PC zealots scorn Macs on principle. But pretty much everyone who uses both PCs and Macs prefers the Mac - ask them.
Nor need a Mac be expensive. You can purchase one that is effectively new directly from Apple in the Refurbs section of its online store at a hefty discount.
This one costs only £539 with free shipping and a year's full warranty (extendable to three years). That's 23% off new price. Buy it through Quidco and you'd get another 3% (£16) off. It has a maximum RAM limit of 2 GB, but that's more than adequate for basic stuff.
With it comes free a suite of programs called iLife 08 with which you can do all sorts of great things.
This one is £700 - but it's seriously powerful and can run 4 GB of RAM. It's new price would be around £900.
Money Saving isn't about buying the cheapest thing on the market and having it fall apart after a year, obliging you to buy another. Money Saving is about getting the best long-term value.
If you bought one of these MacBooks you'd love it - and they are quality items with a friendlier, more trouble-free operating system. You'd never want another PC again.
But, like I said, are you a sheep or do you have the courage to make up your own mind and, like you said, buy something better?
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

You are one serious geek boy. The OP is looking at laptops under 400 and you are suggesting second hand laptops for 540 pounds and upwards.
Try to remember that this is a Moneysaving website and not one for you to spout your religous fervour about Macs.
Go take a cold shower and WAIT for someone to begin a thread about Macs.0 -
The reason that there are fewer Mac-related queries is because a much smaller proportion of computer owners have a Mac! Those who do probably realise that the majority of users are unfamiliar with Macs and so go to a dedicated Mac forum to ask their questions. There's nothing wrong with PCs at all - how many Linux users have malware installed?
Anyway, returning to the point in hand, I've just bought an Acer for a friend from the SimplyAcer website. It has a better chip than the one from Tesco (2.0GHz instead of 1.83GHz, 800MHz FSB instead of 533MHz, and 4MB L2 cache instead of 1MB), although the Tesco Acer has 3GB RAM instead of 2GB.
Anyway, it's just under £380, and the link is here if you're interested:

Hi Leopard,
Please stop referring to me as a sheep.
I have had my pc for about four years and have had no problems with it at all. I did a stupid thing last week and rebooted it while it was checking a driver and lost windows. Nothing to do with Malware. Human error and easily fixed thankfully by someone who knows more about pc's than I ever will.
Because I have had no problems with pc's in the past I would like a laptop to supliment the pc and give me a bit more flexability, which is why I asked for advice on which laptop to buy.
You may be delighted with your Mac and I am very pleased for you but I want to buy a laptop. If it makes me a sheep in your eyes because I don't take your advice and run out and spend more than my budget on a Mac, well I think I can live with that.

Pink- Winged,
1. I like sheep and those of my suits that are not silk are made of wool.
2. You did not specify a budget.
3. You did not specify an operating system.
4. You solicited opinions and suggestions of something better than what you were looking at: I gave of my time to give you some.
5. The two computers to which I provided links ARE laptops.
6. If you are not of a mentality that would encourage you to think laterally and out of the box when exploring whether there might be something better than what you assume, you deny yourself the possibility of discovering something that is.
7. The Mac operating system would give you a spelling-checker.

Not much, apart from Donnie having a mental breakdown in Thailand.

Congratulations of your technical knowledge Leopard in particular your understanding of Mac and your ability to share it with the less technically savvy among us.
May I suggest that having reached the pinnacle of techie know how, you now look in to enrolling yourself in a reputable charm school at the earliest opportunity.
