My son originally didn't like the idea of going to the nearest university. Still to far away to travel each day but only an hour away by train. Now he thinks its great.
I haven't seen him since Easter.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

In answer to the op, I am having the same concerns.
I have been putting aside £25 a month for years for dd. There is currently about £3500 in a savings account for her. I am not sure if it anywhere near enough. I struggled for several of those years to find this regular monthly amount, but am now glad I didn't cancel the direct debit. I have another two years to save.
I have said to dd that I can keep giving her the £25 a month on top of the lump sum (which I will probably divide up and give out annually), but can't afford any more. I will give her food etc as I can ( probably bought with vouchers at Mr T's).

I would have given her not the lump sum, but bits and bobs as it was needed, rather than risk her blowing it all, but then that's my daughter lol.0

A regular monthly allowance helps with budgeting and learning to manage money more than receiving a windfall.0

Earlier in this thread I worked out that the costs of not having him at home would amount to a saving of £35 per week, so you might try a similar calculation and see if you can pass the savings on.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Do you feel that the mere fact that you went to Oxbridge gives you an advantage over somebody else who did equally as well? I am interested, only because you may find that some (not all) employers may feel that the arrogance of some Oxbridge graduates makes them less employable. Not suggesting that you are so arrogant, but some really are and feel that their university education establishment means that they are soooo much better than everybody else, and that their hard work was soooo much harder than everybody elses. Don't take it the wrong way, but I am genuinely interested. I will admit to being a bit of an inverted snob - my hubby went to a private school and I call him a nobbo!! Teasing of course, but all you get to see are the hooray Henrys prancing about with their noses in the air lording it whilst looking down at the rest of us. Maybe it is a stereotype, I don't know but those who have been to Oxbridge have said that is what they are like.
I've just finished my second year of a law degree. Therefore no final degree classification...I got a low 2.1 (63) but am currently predicted a 1st (not gonna happen).
I think part of the problem that we have is that some of you went to other universities some years ago, when I think the story was much different. Right now being a student at virtually any uni outside of Oxbridge, Imperial and maybe LSE is a true part-time occupation. From my understanding (talking to parents and others) this was simply not the case even 10 years ago. I have friends at Nottingham, Edinburgh, Durham, Bristol, Newcastle, UCL and St Andrews (a fair spread then) as well as a few of the polytechnics and by all accounts they have significantly less work than us in terms of contact hours, reading hours and essays written.
Outside of medicine (and vets I suppose) there really does exist a huge gulf between the quality and quantity of work that we are expected to produce. How else do you explain the bias towards us when it comes to careers? We are exposed to a level of independent learning and deep thinking (through the tutorial system - one on one attention etc) that other universities simply don't or can't put their students through. It's the great academic benefit of Oxbridge.0 -

I am currently a student at a newer university, in my final year!
I can assure there is more than two essays per semester - try four times that and you are getting closer!
Plus, our seminar groups are fairly small and we are encouraged to see lecturers on a one to one basis often. They don't have the same amount of time as yours do, but believe me, I spend a lot of time discussing work with my personal tutor (by email as well as f2f though)! He is the one who went to Oxford and believes these discussions are the best way to go, and I agree! Weyhey, we agree on something at least! Don't assume this skill is unique to Oxbridge grads though as that is wrong! Possibly more likely but not a given.
The bias however, is tradition and ingrained thinking as much as any belief that the education is better though tbh. When people either don't know or are faced with two graduates and can't decide - history does it for them - it's that simple. Recruiters rarely have the time to properly assess applicants at the pre-interview stage so are looking for anything to set aside people quickly. They really are not thinking, 'oh he has already been chosen from so many intelligent people and is clearly the creme de la creme' - it is far more automatic than that imo.
Unless of course we are talking about old boy networks? They are just thoroughly blinkered!0
