  • Aldi's and Lidl's dark chocolates get best test results

The German independent product test foundation "Stiftung Warentest" has recently tested 25 dark chocolates. Aldi's Moser Roth and Lidl's Fairglobe are topping the list, beating many high-priced upmarket brands, such as Lindt. The test results are here:

In German, I'm afraid, but I'm sure you'll make sense of the chart.
Both chocs are sold in the UK stores.

    Part of the Furniture
I tried aldi's vegetable lasagnes the other day and they were very tasty and excellent value at 78p. They also have the Four Seasons microwave roasted mediterranean veg (frozen) which you steam in the microwave for about 70p which were very good too.

And their fresh pasta is lovely - had the basil variety last night with freshly grated parmesan on top (aldi again -£1.99 for a big chunk of the stuff) and it was yum!

    Not Aldi, Lidl or Netto.

At Heron Foods (May still have signs up as Heron Frozen Foods) they have excellent frozen veg, under the name of "Cream Of The Crop".

Other smaller shops also sell this brand though at slight higher prices.

The quality and taste is excellent, I've had friends switch to Cream Of The Crop.

Yes, I do like using fresh veg when I can, but often frozen veg is fresher than fresh, unless you can grow it yourself all year around or pick it locally yourself.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
  • Some of their 'home & wear' is brilliant - this computer desk, £20-, & Cupb'd beside it, £17-, much more robust & handsome than the big computer desk they replaced. If u see a bargain, u need to appraise & buy straight away, as good things go fast & don't return! I missed their Crocalike shoes - they almost caused a riot @ local LIDL!
Foods we buy/used to buy b4 diet:
Vac-pack beetroot (esp when reduced to 29p) - mooli (big white radish) -celeriac - Kidney beans - pickled red cabbage - unsweetened juices - choc biscuits - pickled cucumbers - beers - cream cheese - dental floss - vanille rooibos tea - rice cracker snacks - malt vinegar - herb toothpaste
Not so good: Soy milk (too sweet), nougat (WAY too sweet), sweet corn

Just a small one but in Lidl you can get peppercorn in a grinder for 69p (I think) they are really good and the grinder works really well unlike some others, they also have garlic granules, salt and chilli flakes in grinders too (The chillis are excellent BTW, quite hot and lovely on a bit of cheese on toast!)
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
  • Wow what a long thread!!
Apologies if anyone has already posted this link, but heres a site that I find useful when choosing what to buy from all the various Supermarkets.
    http://www.supermarketownbrandguide.co.uk/

Its a site run by a professional food critic who gives many supermarket products marks out of 10. It also shows how healthy each product is.
  • Downside: it only compares Aldi, Lidl and Asda (so far).
    Still worth a close look.
  • Aldi - The little boxes of tapas are delicious as a snack.
Mini spanish pork sausages with hot paprika. 99p. Yummy!
