    Hey!

I've just started to do much the same and am actually quite surprised with most things. I do draw the line at value meat as well - i dread to think whats in those sausages!!

But things like biscuits and fruit and tinned stuff are great. Value sweetcorn just as good as any in my opinion. Oh and Tesco Value Chocolate mousses are about 20p for 4 and lovely!

I can't remember what thread it was on - but someone had actually compared the meat content in the value sausages to those in the "premium" supermarkets own range and it wasn't far off being the same......

I'm a big fan of most value items but I wouldn't touch the washing up liquid (makes me itch), bin bags (they tear so easily) tea (blugh) coffee (blugh blugh) and tuna (it's just mush).

It really is a case of try it and see - big fan of the loo rolls and the washing powder (I add soda crystals to mine and it makes it go a long way) The value mince (fresh - not frozen) is great for burgers or any dish where you can strain the fat off.

  • Very little I dont buy from the value brands and in fact the Asda Mature Smart Price Cheddar is great and I buy it even on the odd occassion I have some pennies.

However I wouldnt go near the Smart Price Tuna, tried it once and it was rotten, although cat liked it ...................

We buy everything value except for frozen sausages, red sauce and mayonnaise. I'd recommend experimenting and trying everything value at least once and just make a note of what you don't like. :)

Edit. I've also recently switched to the tescos own (but not value) washing up liquid. Much much better now :)

Meat is my big no-no. I have always been funny about meat.x

Good meat is important to me as well, so I don't buy any meat at the supermarket, with the exception of sliced ham. All the rest is from our local butcher. Not cheap, but it's an area I won't compromise on, there is such a difference in taste and quality. To economise, I buy less of it and try to have more veggie meals. DH though, doesn't consider a meal to be a meal unless it has a vast hunk of meat in it!

Value stuff I've bought and liked so far (I'm new to all this :D ):
loo roll - surprisingly good considering it's so much cheaper
biscuits - junk might as well be cheap junk (though Lidl is best for 'goodies')
tinned tomatoes - can't tell any difference between those and dearer brands
kitchen towel - the cheaper the better
choc ices - the kids haven't complained

Value stuff I'm not so keen on:
flour - gets those weevils in very quickly
spaghetti/pasta - just not so nice and pasta is cheap anyway

One of my girls is veggie I stil buy value chicken curry for her as I have yet to find a piece of meat in it!
I won't buy the cheap loo roll cos it blocks up your loo and in my experience the cheap washing up liquid is a waste of money too!

Value cheese is great! Don't know what they put in it to stop it melting properly tho, or mayebe that's my cookin haha.
Personally I prefer cheap beans to the top brand.
Don't touch the ketchup with someone elses pole, you get a bottle of red vinegar!
