We're just about ready to do another shop and in true DFW styleee I'm going to buy as many of the value products as I can. I usually only buy value chopped tomatoes and sweetcorn usually sticking to Supermarket own brand or branded but I'm hoping to be a convert! Has anybody got any advice what to avoid?
I personally think toilet roll may be one... but we got a multi pack last time so don't need any this time round- phew:p !!!

Hi, we have recently started buying and using the toilet roll and it isn't that bad at all and soooo much cheaper. I buy lots of value items but will not buy:
meat
bread
eggs
cheese
washing powder
that's all I can think of at the moment, I hope it helps.
Good luck with your shop. The good you do comes back to you.DFW Long haul supporters No: 134

Someone here mentioned that Sainsburys value frozen mince isn't even fit for pet food.
Not tried it myself, and I'm not going to.

Hmmmm nice..... I'm a bit funny about meat anyway so think I'll definitely avoid that thanks *can feel her tummy churning and lump in the throat*
Think I'll try the toilet roll next time.. all in the name of the cause!!!
If I had to choose between buying meat or toilet roll I'd go for the toilet roll every time!!

That is really funny. Some of these value items have no taste. I tried for the first time Morrisons value bacon, no good. Its all fat, but then again that is what you get from bacon. You are 48% tight

Meat is my big no-no. I have always been funny about meat.
However my cats had 1 year where they ate chicken (and nowt else, vets orders!) so they ended up on asda value frozen chicken, and i did feel bad but i couldnt afford the £15 plus per week they were costing on normal chicken!).

Wouldn't buy Value loo roll, but we do buy Value meat (sometimes), eggs and cheese. Agree the bread's a bit hard, though.
Value nappies gave our son a sore bum, so would steer away from those.0 -
I find value toilet roll is fine, it is less soft so erm much more effective cleaning! Ideal for children who take yards of it! Also the more expensive Charmin types don't pulp down as well and can caus plumbing blockages and we don't want them!
I personally do not touch meat, cereal, squash (although fresh juice is OK), the children eat cheese but they only like mild if you like more "tastier" varieties then avoid own label.
I tried not a value range but supermarket own tea and that was horrific never again!0 -
Hey!
I've just started to do much the same and am actually quite surprised with most things. I do draw the line at value meat as well - i dread to think whats in those sausages!!
But things like biscuits and fruit and tinned stuff are great. Value sweetcorn just as good as any in my opinion. Oh and Tesco Value Chocolate mousses are about 20p for 4 and lovely!0 -
Agree with the washing up liquid and deodorant.
I know most people say "no" to value bin bags, but I think they're ok. No way near as good as "normal" bin bags but they're so cheap you can afford to double bag your rubbish and still get good value from them.
Agree the squash is pretty naff, but when we're struggling I get own brand (i.e. not value) orange fruit and barley and Value orange squash and mix them (about 3 parts barley to one part Value) and it's alright. Wouldn't touch the pop, though, even the lemonade.0
