Internet phones advice please?

Hope this is in the right forum

I have 2 sons going to uni soon, and was wondering about them getting an internet phone each, as i thought the calls were free from internet phone to internet phone. I looked at the Skype website, and it said' free calls', then further down the page you had to buy bundles of calls... so i'm confused!
Do you have to pay, like a mobile.. or are they actually free calls?
How do they work?
Can anyone suggest a good buy, as they are watching the pennies!

An extra phone line for just £2 line rental per month - as long as you also have broadband. That’s a saving of over 80% compared with an additional phone line from BT.
Internet Phone Line works just like a normal phone line, with a normal phone which rings just like your current phone. You can use any type of phone you want.
For a one-off connection charge of just £50, we will give you a new phone number - or two numbers if you prefer (at £2 per month each). This is less than half the amount BT charges for installing a new line.
Please note that you have to choose whether you want one or two numbers when you sign up. You cannot add an extra number later.
We will also send you a special adaptor which you plug into your internet router, and then plug in your phone. That’s all there is to it!

Calls are charged at our regular low rates, so you can benefit from unlimited "Free UK Calls" on your extra line (depending on how many of our services you take).

Mark neglects to make it clear that the £2/month extra line isn't a phone line at all, but the uw charge for using voip - which Mark unfairly compares with an extra land line from BT. Nor does he say that to get the £2/month you have to have both your phone line rental and broadband supplied by the uw. (And of course doesn't say what that could cost you!)

It goes without saying that he also failed to mention that in addition to any charges payable to uw, you have to join their "club" at a cost between £1.76 and £3 every month.

He suggests by just paying the uw £50 connection charge that is a great saving over BT's connection charge ("less than half the amount BT charges") - though BT's connection is currently on offer at only £30!

Okayy... thank you.. but what about Skype? Is it not free at all? I don't need an extra phone line, just a way of the kids at uni being able to call me cheaply!

not completely sure but i think i was told ages ago that skype to skype calls are free, but you need credit on your account first.
