Just joined this thread... I quite like the look of this as an upgrade from my N95. Would people recommend? Or is there anything else I should be looking at?
This seems to be the only phone available with all the features of the n95 plus a touch screen, which is essentially what I'm after.
Sorry to hijack this thread, if thats what I am doing.0 -
Asked for this today.....phone for free......£20 a month, 300 mins, 100 texts...orange up-grade, didnt press to much as they wanted £50 for me to up-grade until I went through to retentions.

The HTC Diamond is similar, has a higher resolution screen, but doesn't have expandable memory. Is also to be known as the T-Mobile MDA Compact IV. The Sony Xperia X1 is also due soon, but I don't know where you can get it from other than SIM unlocked. The HTC Touch Pro should be due soon and is a little more appealing to me as it has the QWERTY keyboard. Am going to have to wait until I can actually try an Omnia and see whether the screen is any good to type on.
There are also older phones, like the TyTN II, that are still available and are "N95 with a touch screen"-like, but the newer phones do have a somewhat enhanced and improved user interface.
The deal VaVaVoom got sounds tempting, but I am not on Orange so can't go through retentions
Wonder whether it will make it to O2. *I reserve the right to have an opinion, the right to change this opinion and the right to be wrong.*Hope that helps. If you find this post useful, please feel free to hit the V V V V V V 'Thanks' button below0 -
Thanks for that Cavey. What put me off the diamond was the 'only' 3.2mp camera, seeing as how my n95 has a 5mp camera I don't really want to downgrade like that. I guess its rather fussy but still. The HTC Diamond is similar, has a higher resolution screen, but doesn't have expandable memory. Is also to be known as the T-Mobile MDA Compact IV. Can someone explain to me exactly how the diamond screen will be better with the higher res? I understand its higher but have never quite understood the implications.0 -

Size isn't everything. Just because a camera can save 5Mp files doesn't mean they are any good. If the optics just plain suck the image will be bad no matter what resolution it is captured at. These are cameras built onto a phone. If you compare the image of your N95 to a Canon 300D (also 5Mp), the Canon should be vastly superior. Also, things like proper auto-focus and shake compensation are important, not to mention the sensitivity of the detector in low light levels.
Biggest draw back in the Diamond (compared to the Omnia) IMHO is the storage space. Diamond has 4Gb built in and no expansion slot. Omnia has 8gb or 16Gb and an expansion slot.
Resolution is the number of pixels on the screen. It would be like going from a standard widescreen 32" TV to a 1080p capable widescreen 32" TV. The size remains the same but the number of points increases as their size decreases. This can increase the observed picture quality and allow the display of finer details, but if you already can't see the pixels there's little point. That make sense?*I reserve the right to have an opinion, the right to change this opinion and the right to be wrong.*Hope that helps. That's strange, I ordered one on-line on Wednesday (£50 QuidCo) and it was delivered Thursday morning on a new contract, even though the Customer Services Rep said they didn't do net day delivery only 2 day.
As all the other Orange Omnia's mine is the 16GB Version, unlocked and revision 5 firmware. Currently running with my O2 SIM.Cheers

I was out in town today and took the chance to try the Omnia out in a few shops.
Vodafone's Omnia is locked and branded (in special Voda packaging and all, it has a different model number, i900v), the home screen right softkey has been changed from main menu access to a link to Vodafone live!, and Google Maps is missing. All the settings were mysteriously locked. Maybe they did that for the demonstration unit, perhaps someone with an Omnia from Voda can furnish further details?
I don't know how easy it is to install additional applications on a Windows Mobile device or if it can be debranded. Anyway they said they would unlock it for £20. The lady mentioned that if I updated the firmware from the manufacturer I would lose the Voda customizations. As mentioned, I am not sure if there are technical barriers to this; a Google search on 'samsung omnia debrand' turned up nothing useful. Anyway there's a hard branding in the form of a Voda logo under the glass just below the earpiece.
The Orange shop in Cambridge (Lion Yard) does not yet stock Omnias.
Phones4u are offering it on Orange only (I asked at the shop). I was repeatedly lied to by a salesman about data plan costs and he tried to push a BB Pearl on me. My saying that I was interested only in the Omnia or the Bold were mostly ignored. Will not buy from them. The one I tried out wasn't branded but he said it is locked to Orange. He refused to tell me if it could be unlocked, saying the telcos have set strict guidelines against advising customers about the possibility of unlocking. Is this fact?
Finally, although I was disgusted at that salesman I popped into another Phones4u branch I passed by on my way to Lakeland (looking for Remoska stuff, whee!). This lady was a lot more friendly and said if I waited until next month when they offered it on different carriers I might be able to get an unlocked one.
Of all the tariffs I saw, Voda's deal is the best, 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data/email for £35/month for 18 months. They also said the phone is fully warranted by them for the full 18 months. I like that deal but don't like the branding and if I can't change that live! link to something more useful (like the default link to the main menu, grr!)
P4u's deal was with Orange, 700m/100t (I think this is Canary 35) plus 7.50 for data.
I wish O2 would come out with it. Oh well, I'll see, September's only 2 days away....
It's such a nice phone; on another hand I'm not tired of my iPhone (the old one, I like aluminium, and it was a relative bargain) yet, it's not let me down so far, I know my contract's ending soon but I must not be tempted....
