Not exactly sure what you mean by bonfire toffee. is this a special type?

This is the recipe I used to make for my kids, I wrapped the set toffee in a bit of greaseproof paper for them to hold it by

    TOFFEE FOR CAKES
    8 OZ SUGAR
    4 OZ BUTTER
    1 TIN CONDENSED MILK
    2 TABLESPOONS OF TREACLE
Melt all the ingredients slowly until the sugar is completely dissolved, stirring continuously
Bring to the boil and boil gently for 2 minutes, stirring
Continue to boil for 12 minutes stirring often
    Pour into buttered bun trays

    Many thanks
Sorry, I meant the bonfire toffee flavoured sweets, but your ingredients are pretty similar to the ones I use to use.
    Will give it a whirl.....

Ok, so I've looked in both the mega index and done a big search through this thread and haven't found a recipe for toffee (like you get in Thorntons). I can find fudge and butter tablet but no toffee.

Has anybody got a good recipe that they care to share?

    Thank you!

I haven't tried it, but this site is my new favorite source for sweet recipes, I found the link at the end of the mega index thread.

hi joeyemma this is the one i use for bonfire toffee.
    ingredients:
    1 lb sugar,preferably demerara
    1/3 pint water
    1 1/4 ozs butter
    2 level tablespoons golden syrup
    1 teaspoon white vinegar
Put all the ingredients into a strong saucepan and stir over a steady heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Bring to the boil and cook slowly.
To test for consistency stage drop about half a teaspoon of the mixture into a cup of cold water,if it sets hard then its done,if still soft and chewy cook for a little longer and test again.
Pour into oiled or buttered tin and either allow to set as a slab or mark in squares as toffee becomes partially set.
    Break up when completely set.
For variety use black treacle instead of syrup or add peanuts or chopped mixed nuts.
if i can make this then anyone can...

Thanks, they both look like good recipes!

I have a sugar thermometer, so what temp do I need to heat things up to for the bonfire toffee? Also, how will it taste compared to Thorntons style toffee? Can I get away with a tsp of malt vinegar instead of white?

  • Seeing as how it'll soon be Bonfire Night, I thought I'd bump up this thread for any Bonfire Night recipes people might want to post!
