    Check this out at Lidl:

I don't remember seeing this in a Lidl flyer but it may be there. The Lidl site doesn't indicate that it is a regional offer so it should be open to all who can get to a Lidl store. Note that this is an offer available from Sat, 12 Nov 2005.

A quick bit of googling revealed that the player is a rebadged LG (a good brand) and to a large extent supports the latest DivX 6 playback. The chipset used is also very highly regarded and firmware updates seem to be available (official and hacked).

Best of all £19.99 for DVD and DivX/MPEG4 support plus Card Reader and 3 year warranty!

The model appears to be the Targa DP-5100x. Check out these websites for more details:

This player can be made region free by following these instructions:

I've just seen the same dvd player on Ebay for £9.99. I don't know what price it will finish at, but it's worth trying!

eBay is great; but for these devices which may be prone to your heavy use over time, it may be worthwhile splurging that little bit more for a purchase at conventional retailer where your included warranty should be at least a year and maybe as much as three years. Even if you know for sure that the manufacturer will honour a warranty for an item bought from a particular eBay seller, it can be much easier to return the item to your nearby shop if something goes wrong with it.
  • It's really easy to turn most single-region DVD players or integrated TV/DVD units into multiregion players. Just do a search online for the company, model number and "region hack". For example, we recently bought a cheapie Alba DVD/TV at Argos. I did an online search for Alba, the model number, and region hack, got the following instructions, and read them over the phone to my 14-year-old. Worked a treat:

    switch to DVD

    on the remote press Setup

press Next 4 times (shows a '2' on topright of screen)

press right arrow key until shows 255

    press Enter

    Press Setup

It is a nice feature to have on a DVD player.

The above is what happens with NTSC/60 discs, what you are seeing is the 3:2 pull down, on PAL/50 (PAL/NTSC used simply for ease) the frames are shown as from the film/off the disc just speeded up from 24f/s to 25f/s so having progressive scan is only any use with a progressive display like an LCD TV, progressive has no benefit whatsoever when watching on an interlace device like a CRT TV which is what most people have.

The following maybe of some help: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/24p_in_FCP_nattress.html
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • I wonder why the price of DVDs havent come down - its ironic we can now buy a multiregion DVD player cheaper than some of the DVDs I have seen!
