hi can anyone tell me about private number plates i want to get one for my fella as he has brought a new car but i remember watching something on tv about some being ilegal so dont want to get him in to trouble and havnt got a clue where to start ?

as long as the letters/numbers arent moved to simulate other than what it says there fine,i got mine d20 mdw and its fine

so he can have any letters and numbers he wants then do they have to be from a certain place ?

you cant make the car look newer than it is either

and as above , you cant squish letters/numbers together to make it look like something else such as 11 squished up with a screw between em looks like a H

have a look on www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk or www.new-reg.co.uk to see whats available. Once you have bought a plate, get it made somewhere reputable (car dealer for example) so you know it meets the required standard.

you can't just wonder into halfords and say i want "xyz 123 " on a plate

you have to buy the rights to display the plate, then get the physical plate made up

mine was purchased from the dvla website,total cost was £495 including transfer fee

As well as giving them proof of ID.;)

i found halfords a pain in the !!!! getting a plate made up, so i ordered one on ebay, turned up the next day and was perfect

Fancy Plates will make anything you want, and no ID required either.

I was wondering if you need any of the above mentioned when bidding for a number plate at one of DVLA's auctions? I don't have neither, but would like a persolised number plate now for possible use in the future if I get a car and driver's license. Otherwise I would like it as an investment. Thanks
