Does the base your son is on not have rooms for visiting families? I was based in RAF Akritori in 2003 and they have rooms to rent for visiting families for a nomial fee. Also can you not get forces family flights from Brize Norton?

Although I post mainly on the mobile phones forum I'm also a RAF Reservist based at RAF Brize Norton. I'm due to go to the Squadron during the week (currently unemployed) and I'll have a look for you if you're interested.

Mom I am a veteran of the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. I read much of your thread because I was 17 years old when I left my home in the mountains of West Virginia to go on the GREAT ADVENTURE and see the world. My mom cried for a few days,but then she became my best friend and helper for 5 years until I got married. I appreciate the sacrafice your family has made for the protection of the free world and am thankful we have allies like your family.. I would check and see if your son can use prepaid international phone cards. This is something that can be bought in lots of minutes and can be used in various regions. It is always nice to call MOM whenever you get a little homesick or on holidays.
