In our office, we've just been talking about being bored with our jobs and what would happen if we all swapped round in a sort of 'pick a job out of a hat' style - one of my colleagues said "but what if I got Redsquirrel's job, I couldn't survive on that salary" (obviously she didn't call me Squirrel lol).. I feel officially poor now!! :(

we are not allowed to talk about wages for that reason

neither are we but as the person who pays the wages, and gets paid the least, there is definately injustice in this world!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

I think that was a pretty snidey, condescending and ignorant thing to say actually! sounds like a !!!!!! to me!

I don't think she meant it in a nasty way, but I did feel a bit put down by it.. the funny thing is she, like me, lives alone, pays a mortgage which is probably less than my rent... she just couldn't 'survive' because she couldn't shop in M&S all the time. I think there's a little bit of admiration in there because I do (just about) manage on this salary and she's struggling a bit despite earning about £10,000 more than me.

Mark, unfortunately we all know pretty much what each other earn because we know what 'scale' each job is... mine's a bit of a joke though as have the same responsibility as some people on higher scales.. but ho hum!

You could throw your keys into a hat or play spin the bottle to add a bit of variety to the proceedings :D I second what Linda said

My and Boyf had a serious chat about monies last night as I got a bit down after adding up my credit cards (I owe about £5000 more than I had estimated).

I've decided it's good that I have now faced up to it and am seriously going to start tackling the debts properly. I always ensure I pay at least the minimum payment to stop getting late fees etc (which doesn't always work as I sometimes send the cheque later). Next week I'm setting up DDs on all the cards so they get paid on time.
Next month I'm going to try to pay off the River Island card in full as well.

Boyf thinks I should use my ISA to pay off another card as well...what does everyone think of that? He reckons you shouldn't have savings if you have a debt, but I like having it there so I know that if something major happened, I could get the cash out of it. I've got about £2500 in there at the mo and pay £100 month in. I took some out last year to pay of the HP on my car.

Oh and he said he's started saving up to buy me an engagement ring!! Yippee!! (I told him it needs to be at least a month's wages!)

redsquirrel - I think that was a bit out of order for that person to say. Maybe they meant it jokingly, but people should think before they speak. How do they know how much you get paid anyway? We never discuss wages in our office as everyone is on completely different levels (you can kinda guess how much people earn though).
