As I'm afraid must Sky... you can use it as a freeview box once you have cancelled the subscriptions :)
And GET EBAYING :) I bet you can easily raise £50 on there which will make the month a lot easier :)

I was thinking about getting rid of Sky, but I honestly don't think I can bring myself to do it.:o

As I mentioned on one of the earlier posts, I don't get out (you can see why from my budget) and have sleep issues due to depression and so spend most evenings and early hours channel hopping!!!

Sometimes I think it is the only thing that keeps me sane......

As for Ebay......not sure that I have anything worth selling.....will have a good root around for surplus stuff that somebody/anybody might want.

    Hi Tiny Paws,

With regards to the phone for your X, have u thought about getting a free Pay as u go sim and only putting it in ur phone at set times when he rings u? Thats what I did, works a treat :D
Have u got friends with slightly older children? might be worth asking for hand me downs, also maybe do babysitting at urs to earn extra £

    Good Luck

Ex hasn't had any contact since middle Nov!!!! Solicitor has advised me to make sure that he can make contact at any time and visit as and when he wants. Also to keep a diary of calls, texts, emails and visits. Apparently this will go in my favour if/when he ever tries to get overnight stays. So the phone has to stay.

I have 1 friends with older girls, but she has a SIL who gets all hand me downs.....so thats out aswell.

Thanks for you suggestions......keep them coming....

  • Hi There,

I too thought I couldn't live without my £56 a month sky habit! BUT I did cancel it right down to basic £19 or £20 a month) and to be honest, I can't say I have missed it! I get everything except movies and sport  Movies you can rent cheaply, or I have found if there is a movie I really want to see friends normally have the DVD anyway!

Although Xmas is over and done with this year, I too was like you and thought "I could never bring the subject up of not buying presents" but this year I just said "actually do you know what, we are all finding it a bit tight, so why don't we just do token (£5) presents or none at all? I don't mind if you don't mind? It was amazing how relieved everyone was!!! :D Of course you still need to buy for your daughter but it would cut down your Xmas budget drastically - go on give it a go, start the conversation around about Sept - I bet you will be very pleasantly surprised!

also, without wanting to sound harsh, you do NOT need to over compensate for being a single parent - what you will end up with is a spoilt child and that is not going to help either you or her in the long run. You cannot afford to do it, either financially or otherwise. What you have for her is your unconditional love, and the knowledge that you are doing the best for her future - that costs nothing, and is a great deal more use than a whole load of additional toys.

    .

Are you taking any medication for your depression? If so you may be able to switch onto an antidepressant that also has sedative properties. There are a couple but I take Mirtazepine - the only thing that helps me sleep. It may or may not be suitable for you, but could be worth an ask?

Also £100 for Xmas is from July onwards. £600 for Xmas total including all gifts (I buy for 11 adults and 8 children......I also tendto over compensate for my lo having only 1 parent and buy her enough toys to do the whole year), food, treats, new clothes for lo etc.

Either agree with the adults to only buy for each others kids, or agree on a £5 each person maximum challenge or do a Secret Santa between you all. It may seem hard to raise the issues - I did it by asking my family to 'adopt' a child from a poor country, pointing out that none of us really want for anything. We have now agreed to do charity donations for each other regularly. Nobody will know how much, or little, you have spent!

I am taking medication citalopram and amtripaline(sp?). My doc isn't too keen on giving me sleeping tablets incase I don't wake up with the lo during the night.

I might mention the Mirtazapine to my doc at my next appointment....Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how that goes.....

I know I shouldn't do this. I may have made it sound worse than it actually is. She is only 2 and at Xmas I buy the toys to do her for the following year. I don't buy any toys throughout the year. This is what my mum used to do when my father wasn't living at home (more often than not).
